Chlorine emergency kits

Although chlorine is a hazardous substance, it can he handled safely. All persons who handle chlorine should he thoroughly trained in its properties, in correct use of safety equipment, and in the nperulion ol all other equipment including containers. The Chlorine Institute. 342 Madison Ave.. New York. NY 10017. publishes Ihe Chlorine Manual (available from the Insli-(ule at nominal cost) which provides useful information on these matters. In addition the Chlorine Institute has designed emergency kits capable of capping off certain types of leaks which can occur in chlorine containers. [Pg.371]

A special case involves the plugging of leaks in pressurized shipping containers. For example, The Chlorine Institute has developed a series of emergency kits designed to contain most leaks encountered in shipping containers, including ton cylinders, road tankers, and rail cars (The Chlorine Institute, 1969). Figure 5.4 shows this kit. [Pg.104]

The Chlorine Institute provides emergency kits for repair of cylinders (Kit A) and ton containers (Kit B) and for temporary containment of leaks. Users should ensure that their containers are compatible with these kits. When a leaking cylinder cannot be repaired, it should be enclosed in a leakproof recovery vessel and returned to the supplier. Cl Drawing 188 (issue 2, 1993) shows such a vessel. [Pg.880]

Leaks in the vicinity of the cylinder and ton container valve stems can usually be stopped by tightening the packing nut. If this does not stop the leak, the valve should be closed and the chlorine in the outlet piping evacuated. If the valve cannot be shut leak-tight, the outlet cap with gasket should be installed. In the event the valve continues to leak, the applicable emergency kit recommended by the Chlorine Institute should be used to seal the leak and the cylinder/container moved to a safe area. See the section Emergency Kits. ... [Pg.327]

Apply the appropriate Chlorine Institute Emergency Kit or place the cylinder in a recovery vessel designed to contain the lead. See section on Emergency Kits. [Pg.327]

All people on a chlorine plant are advised to carry escape-type respirators. The use of filter masks is prohibited where there is a risk of a high concentration of chlorine. Anyone who enters an area with high chlorine concentrations should be equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective clothing suitable for dealing with liquid chlorine. Protective equipment, safety showers, eye-wash facilities, and emergency kits [24] must be quickly accessible. [Pg.155]

The Chlorine Institute has released pamphlets and recommendations covering all aspects of safety, e.g., first aid [258], emergency response plans [259], protective equipment [260], prevention of injuries to personnel [261], prevention of chlorine releases [262], and estimating the area affected by a chlorine release [263]. Emergency kits have been developed for sealing leaks in chlorine containers, drums, and tank cars [264],... [Pg.156]
