Emergency kits

It has been stated that adults with mastocytosis as well as children with bullous lesions and with more severe involvement, and especially those with previous reactions, are at increased risk for anaphylaxis [4]. Thus, we recommend that patients at risk carry an emergency kit for self-medication which includes epinephrine and, as warranted, an antihistamine and a corticosteroid [38]. 

Are personnel trained in the emergency response plan and the use of emergency kits, PPE, and SCBAs ... 

Although chlorine is a hazardous substance, it can he handled safely. All persons who handle chlorine should he thoroughly trained in its properties, in correct use of safety equipment, and in the nperulion ol all other equipment including containers. The Chlorine Institute. 342 Madison Ave.. New York. NY 10017. publishes Ihe Chlorine Manual (available from the Insli-(ule at nominal cost) which provides useful information on these matters. In addition the Chlorine Institute has designed emergency kits capable of capping off certain types of leaks which can occur in chlorine containers. 

A special case involves the plugging of leaks in pressurized shipping containers. For example, The Chlorine Institute has developed a series of emergency kits designed to contain most leaks encountered in shipping containers, including ton cylinders, road tankers, and rail cars (The Chlorine Institute, 1969). Figure 5.4 shows this kit.

Make available Standing Orders and an Emergency Kit for possible reactions to vaccine/first dose of medication. 

Ensure general emergency kit accounts for terrorist attacks dust mask, battery-powered radio, duct tape and plastic sheeting. 

GlucaGen powder for injection 1 mg (1 unit), Glucagon emergency kit powder for injection 1 mg (1 unit), Glucagon diagnostic kit powder for injection 1 mg (1 unit))... 

A glucagon emergency kit should be available in homes and family members should be instructed in the use of the kit in case of hypoglycaemia. It should be followed by the use of glucose as soon as possible.

The placement of emergency kits containing controlled substances in LTCF not registered with the DEA will be deemed in compliance with the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970, if the appropriate state agency or regulatory authority specifically approves such placement, and sets forth procedures that require the following ... 

Source of supply The LTCF must obtain controlled substances for the emergency kits from a DEA registered hospital/clinic, pharmacy, or practitioner. 

Security safeguards Access to each emergency kit in the LTCF must be restricted and the type and quantity of controlled substances which may be placed in the emergency kit must be specifically limited. 

Administration of controlled substances In emergency medical situations when medication is needed from the emergency kit, only LTCF personnel who is authorized by an individual practitioner can administer the controlled substances. 

Prohibited activities Prohibited activities can result in the state revoking, suspending, or denying emergency kits containing controlled substances in a LTCF.
