Chitosan prevention

The bactericidal properties of chitosan prevent bad breath. Low molecular weight chitosan has also been shown to inhibit the oral adsorption of streptococci and have been proposed as a potential anticavity agent [205], This makes chitosan a good additive in oral hygienic products such as tooth pastes, oral rinsing solutions and chewing gums. [Pg.534]

Recently, attention has been paid to chitosan because of its favorable biological properties, such as biodegradabihty, biocompatibility, and nmi-toxicity, as weU as its physiochemical properties [2, 3]. Moreover, it has been reported that chitosan can accelerate gastric ulcer healing [4], that pretreatment with chitosan prevents ulcerogenic effect in rats [5], and that chitosan displays antimicrobial activity [6,7]. [Pg.94]

Note that some treatment operations choose a pollution prevention technique to dispose of the float. This involves feeding the float to animals. When this is done for the situation where the feed animals are used for human consumption, organic compounds such as chitosan, carrageenan, lignosulfonic acid,or their derivatives can be used. Use only compounds that are approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Veterinary Medicine. [Pg.322]

Chitosan freeze-dried fleeces support chondrocyte attachment and synthesis of extracellular matrix [344]. Chitosan was used to assist the spontaneous tissue repair of the meniscus [345]. The repair of the cartilage and the prevention of its degradation in osteoarthritis is, however, possible with the association of glucosamine sulfate salt and chondroitine sulfate, the latter being particularly effective [346]. [Pg.198]

The powder X-ray diffractograms of the composites present the characteristic peaks of the encapsulated zeolite [9]. It is interesting to observe that no characteristic peak of chitosan was present in the XRD patterns of composites. It is clear that the presence of the zeolites has prevented the crystallisation of chitosan when the gel has been dried. This phenomenon has been already observed when the zeolite content reaches a threshold value and has been attributed to a strong interaction between zeolite and chitosan [10],... [Pg.390]

FU (12.5 mg/kg twice daily) plus chitosan (150, 375 and 750 mg/kg twice daily) inhibited the tumor growth as well as 5-FU alone. Chitosan (150 and 750 mg/kg twice daily) blocked the reduction of blood leukocyte number caused by 5-FU administration, and it prevented the injury of the small intestinal mucosa membrane and delayed the onset of diarrhea induced by 5-FU Fig. (1), Fig. (2) and Fig. (3) . Furthermore, chitosan (750 mg/kg twice daily) prevented the reduction of spleen weight induced by 5-FU in sarcoma 180-bearing mice Fig. (4) , and the reduction of lymphocyte, CD8+ and NK1.1.+ T cell numbers induced by 5-FU Fig. (5) . [Pg.560]

While that demonstration is an attention-grabber, it isn t realistic. You can t stuff yourself full of fat and expect chitosan to save you from dietary damnation. There s a limit to the amount of chitosan that the body can handle comfortably. One can easily handle a few grams a day, and the stuff will prevent the absorption of some ten to twenty grams of fat, but that would hardly make a dimple in the fat content of the cornucopia of rich foods the hucksters insist we can consume without guilt. Clearly, chitosan is no miracle. There is no fat-free lunch. But chitosan is not a total dietary dud, either. [Pg.44]

Another approach to reach delayed release from chitosan matrices are ionic interactions with polyanions. The formation of a polyelectrolyte complex membrane prevents early drug release. Via this method microcapsules can be formed between chitosan and alignate or even nanoparticles can be derived upon the complexation of chitosan with the polyanion tripolyphosphate. [Pg.149]
