Chiral applications

In this situation the two end-ring double bonds define a positive chirality. Application of the twisted diene rule gives a positive sign for the lowest-energy 1A - 1B transition, and in the case of 15-cA-(3R,3 R)-zeaxanthin this is confirmed by experiment.

Then, in Figure 1.21 the large-format result is displayed as the number of totally symmetric components of the decoration direct sum, while Figure 1.22 is the more detailed display for chiral applications, in this example, the full list of direct sum components in the decoration character of the C72o-vertexed structure, of Ih point symmetry, subject to xyzuvw decoration. 

Chiral selectors are routinely used in industry for a wide variety of applications and there have been many reports published describing their use in CE for the enantiomeric separations of pharmaceutical compounds. A quick search of scientific databases will yield a far greater number of publications dealing with chiral CE than is possible to cover in this chapter however. Table 4.2 contains a selection of such applications and details of carrier electrolytes used. Readers are referred to review papers [16,63,64,116,107,141-144], which comprehensively cover recent chiral applications of CE and provide more detailed theory about chiral separations and detection methods. 

Generally, better chromatographic performance is found with chiral separations in the normal phase for most column manufacturers. It is also likely that the easier solvent removal after collecting the isolated enantiomer, is what drove the industry to normal phase chromatography for chiral applications. It is advantageous to the chiral chromatographer that the majority of the commercially available normal phase LC CSPs and modifiers can be used on both LC and SFC instrumentation. This flexibility allows methods developed using one mode to be transferred to the other...
