Economic Aspects. U.S. production statistics for the period 1980 to 1988 are given ia Table 4 (220). Exports amount to ca 20% of annual United States production, and imports amount to almost 10% of domestic production. The main foreign producers are Japan, South Africa, and Canada. South Korea, Brazil, and The People s RepubHc of China are minor producers. Japan s Nippon Soda Co., Ltd. is the world s third largest producer. Two other Japanese producers are Toyo Soda Co., Ltd., and Nankai Chemical Industry, Ltd. [Pg.474]

Only 10 firms account for 75% of agrochemicals sales, while the 15 largest drug companies have a market share of only 33% (Stinson, 1995). About 85% of fine chemicals are manufactured by companies of the triad the United States (28%), Western Europe (39%), and Japan (17%). Italy, with 4.0 million litres reactor capacity and 71 manufacturers, topped the European fine chemicals industry (Layman, 1993). Recently India, China, and Eastern-Central European countries have gained a significant proportion of the market, as a result of the lower direct labour costs and the more relaxed environmental and safety standards. It is fair to state that the high quality of chemists in these countries has also contributed to this development. In 1993, the cost of producing fine chemicals in India was 12% below that in Europe (Layman, 1993). [Pg.2]

China s chemical industry began with a 40,000 Ton/per year Caustic Soda Plant in 1914. A few plants producing basic industrial chemicals were built in the 1930 s. By 1949, what the Sino-Japanese War (WW II) did not destroy of China s chemical industry, the Soviets managed to dismantle and remove. [Pg.332]

In 1948, three small oil fields produced 876,000 barrels per year, and in 1956, with the discovery of oil in Xinjiang, China s oil production rose to 22 million b/year. China was a net importer of oil until 1963. Her Chemical Industry did not really really take off until 1973, when oil from the fields in North China started to flow. China s Chemical Industry is still in the embryonic states. Given the present production level of 2.3 million barrels/day, China has finally entered the petrochemical era. She has developed a credible, if still thin, infrastructure, research backup, and downstream integration for its petrochemical industry. [Pg.332]

China s petrochemical exports are still quite limited at present. International sales are handled primarily through SINOCHEM. In the near future, we may expect the Ministry of Chemical Industry to be more directly involved in exporting through China National Chemical Industry to be more directly involved in exporting through China National Chemical Construc-... [Pg.340]
