Significant improvement in the fiber stmctuie of leather is finally achieved by using microfibers as fine as 0.001—0.0001 tex (0.01—0.001 den). With this microfiber, a man-made grain leather Sofrina (Kuraray Co., Ltd.) with a thin surface layer (Fig. 7), and a man-made suede Suedemark (Kuraray Co., Ltd.) with a fine nap (Fig. 8) were first developed for clothing, and have expanded their uses. Ultrasuede (Toray Industries, Inc.) also uses microfibers with a rather thick fineness of 0.01 tex (0.1 den). Contemporary (1995) man-made leathers employ microfibers of not mote than 0.03 tex (0.3 den) to obtain excellent properties and appearance resembling leather.

Co. Ltd (SPR) was founded to recycle the waste plastics collected in Sapporo city, where 13 500 t has been baled every year. This system has received excellent support by Sapporo city. However, only half of the baled plastics is used in the SPR liquefaction plant located just next to the baling plant due to the tender system controlled by JCPRA. Thus, the operating ratio of the SPR plant is not so high, and this also raises the treatment cost of waste plastics, as does the small scale. The remaining half is used for the iron and steel industry, far from Sapporo. The third liquefaction plant constructed at Mikasa city, Hokkaido stopped this March, since sufficient raw plastic waste could not be obtained.

This asymmetric carbene reaction has been extended successfully, but in an unexpected direction [37]. Thus, as illustrated in Scheme 10, the cyclopropane synthesis is now used for the industrial synthesis of Cilastatin (36), which acts as an excellent in vivo stabilizer of the antibiotic Imipenem (37) (Merck Co., USA, and Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd., Japan). Chiral bisoxazolidine-Cu complexes (Structures 38 and 39) also exhibit high efficiency in asymmetric cyclopropanation [38]. 

Armordon is also a polypropylene based self-reinforced plastic manufactured by Don Low Ltd. The production process is similar to the production of PURE and combines two different types of PP ensuring a strong affinity between the two components of the tape. Further processing steps may use the tapes directly for winding or tape placement processes or they can be woven into fabrics. Typical applications can be found in the security industry as armor, since Armordon shows an excellent ballistic performance. Additionally, applications in the automotive sector and consumer products such as luggage are imaginable.
