A number of chemistry histories describe discoveries in great detail. I have not attempted to duplicate what they do so well. Instead I have concentrated on the lives of the people who transformed chemistry into a modern science. I have not shied away from explaining their most important discoveries, but I have not dwelled on the technical details. [Pg.292]

Our observations are similar to those of Blanck et al. (2003), who studied the variability in zinc tolerance in periphyton communities sampled from 15 European river stretches using the PICT concept. Due to differences in water chemistry, (history of) metal pollution, species composition, and other biotope characteristics, the regional uncertainty factor for Zn was estimated to range from 1.7 to 4.3, and the interregional uncertainty factor from 2.4 to 8.6, when extrapolating periphyton tolerances from river to river (Blanck et al. 2003). [Pg.240]

Co and Cr ammines were among the first to be investigated by Reinecke, Jmgensen, Werner (Nobel prize, 1912), and Pfeiffer in the early days of coordination chemistry see Coordination Chemistry History), and this work continues today (Taube, Nobel Prize, 1984). [MX(NH3)5]"+ (X = anionic or neutral group) is particularly well-studied and has even been used as a protecting group in peptide synthesis. Variation of M has a considerable influence on the rate of the Solvolysis of X (Table 4). [Pg.176]

The remarkable chemical and coirfigurational stability of octahedral Cr complexes see Octahedral) was responsible for their role in the groundbreaking work of Alfred Werner, the father of modem coordination chemistry see Coordination Chemistry History). In the twentieth century, the same properties led to their use in studies of the reaction mechanisms of metal complexes. In recent years, the chemistry of the chromium carbon bond has been the most active area of research in chromium chemistry see Chromium Organometallic Chemistry), motivated in part... [Pg.766]
