Bibliography—history, 5 chemistry

ITS HISTORY, CHEMISTRY, JIIN ERALOGY, GEOLOGY, METALLURGY, USES, PREPARATIONS, ANALYSIS, PRODUCTION, AND VALUATION WITH COMPLETE BIBLIOGRAPHIES. [Pg.218]

Comprehensive report discussing world nitrogen situation, history, chemistry and construction and operating costs of various processes as well as U. S. Government nitrate plants. Bibliography for 1917-22. [Pg.139]

There are also several bibliographies of chemistry which deal with the older literature but are of considerable historical importance. A Select Bibliography of Chemistry by H. C. Bolton (Smithsonian Institute, Washington, 4 vols, 1893-1904), covers the literature of chemistry from 1492 to 1902 but deals mainly with books published in America and Europe and excludes much of the periodical literature. The Bibliography section is fairly complete but only the most important alchemical works are mentioned. In most sections titles are arranged alphabetically by author which makes it convenient for reference, and the sections on history and alchemy have useful annotations. Dissertations listed are mainly from the universities of France, Germany, Russia and the United States. It is a useful guide to the older chemical books. [Pg.36]

Section Dwb of the Isis Cumulative Bibliography, on chemistry in North America, lists only twenty-seven entries (II, Whitrow, 1976,184-185). There has been no synoptic history since Edgar Fahs Smith s Chemistry in America (III, E. F. Smith, 1914 see also III, E. F. Smith, 1927). However, aspects of nineteenth-century American chemistry are treated in III, Beardsley, 1964, and Kenneth L. Taylor has recently provided a two-century survey (III, Taylor, 1976). The American Chemical Society has sponsored historical publications in commemoration of major anniversaries see III, ACS, 1951a III, Browne and Weeks, 1952 III, C EN, 1976 IB, Miles, 1976 and IB, Skolnik and Reese, 1976. A pioneering set of essays on chemical engineering appear in III, Furter (ed.), 1980 and 1982. [Pg.2]

Many other experts also helped make this book as accurate and readable as possible. A number of them spent considerable time and thought helping me, and I thank them at the beginning of each chapter s bibliography. The history of science and, in particular, the history of chemistry, is enjoying a remarkable boom, and I hope that a book aimed at a general audience will alert readers to this interesting new field. [Pg.256]

Two helpful bibliographic works have appeared. The first, issued by the Beckman Center for the History of Chemistry in Philadelphia, is a short pamphlet for those who wish to start to work in the field.8 The other is a survey of all books, pamphlets, catalogues and articles that have appeared on the history of scientific instruments between 1983 and 1995.9 This bibliography has been published by the Scientific Instrument Commission of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science. It is an on-going project and an on-line cumulative bibliography is now available.10... [Pg.216]

For readers who want to read further in the history of chemistry we offer the following bibliography. Only sources in English and sources likely to be available (even if out-of-print) in good public libraries or university or college libraries are listed. [Pg.450]

The approach we chose is not that of exhaustive historical research. What we have given here is an overview of the history of chemistry (though with accompanying footnotes and bibliography), and a work completely derived from secondary sources (one venture into primary sources embroiled us in medieval Latin before we abandoned... [Pg.482]

This article will present a very brief sketch of the history and theory of wavelet analysis, and then list a few applications to physical and computational chemistry. The subject spans many disciplines, and its literature comprises thousands of articles and books, making it easy to venture beyond the current scope. The popular surveys in the bibliography are a good source of more general information the ambitious reader is invited to consult the more technical works for the mathematical details. Most applications to date are described in scholarly journals, but many are collected in edited compilations. " ... [Pg.3214]
