Chemistry case study

Similarly, the various EU directives that mandate substance bans have initiated wide scale research and development of alternative materials. Lead is a case in point. Lead has been widely used in the electronic industry in solders. Lead-free solders have existed for many years but it was the mandate in the Restriction of use of certain Flazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) to have products free of lead by July 2006 that spurred industry research, planning and adoption of the substitutes. Annex I lists examples of Green Chemistry case studies where research was stimulated in response to legislation targeting hazardous materials. [Pg.10]

Key Concepts of Interfacial Properties in Food Chemistry CASE STUDY LIPID OXIDATION OF EMULSIONS The case of lipid oxidation in an emulsified system is a perfect example to illustrate the importance of interfacial properties in food chemistry. The goal of this case study is not to completely describe the very complex mechanisms of lipid oxidation in emulsions. Indeed, many investigators over the past years have focused on this research area. Instead, the key interfacial parameters that influence lipid oxidation in emulsions are emphasized. [Pg.626]

Ammonia is produced industrially by the Haber-Bosch process (see also the Industrial Inorganic Chemistry Case Study) which was discovered just before World War I in Germany. It was introduced at a time when naturally occurring sodium nitrate, NaNO, from Chile was the main raw material for the synthesis of fertilizers. The available nitrate deposits were insufficient to keep pace with demand, and the Haber-Bosch process undoubtedly helped to prevent mass starvation at the time. The completion of the first functioning ammonia plants by the chemical company BASF coincided with the start of the war, and they were also used to fuel the production of explosives for the German and Austro-Hungarian armies. [Pg.162]

As is common in heterocyclic chemistry, many studies concern tautomeric equilibria. While quantum chemical calculations are straightforward for the question of the most stable isomer, experiments are sometimes very demanding. Therefore, quantum chemistry can easily provide answers that may require substantial experimental effort. Comparatively few studies concern the investigation of entire reaction paths. This is much more demanding than computing a limited number of tautomers, of course, but usually provides a very detailed picture of the reaction mechanism. In certain cases, it was only possible to judge the nature of a chemical reaction on the basis of quantum chemical calculations. [Pg.85]

The writing of this book was undertaken because it was intended to be the first work that solely focuses on chemistry, and what appropriate metrics for Green Chemistry might be. We hope the book provides an up-to-date and authoritative text on the current development of environmental concepts in chemical technologies from clean and green to sustainable development. We also think it provides up-to-date information on the problems of metrics fundamental aspects of metrics, practical realisations and real-world case study examples. The concepts and approaches of metrics are related to the fundamental problems in chemistry and the main focus is on the use of metrics to promote the development and implementation of green chemistry and technology solutions. [Pg.330]

A lot of research has been published on hydroformylation of alkenes, but the vast majority of the effort has been focused on the chemistry of various metal-ligand systems. Quantitative kinetic studies including modeling of rates and selectivities are much more scarce. In this work, we present the approach to modeling of hydroformylation kinetics and gas-solubility. Hydroformylation of 1-butene with a rhodium-based catalyst was selected as a case study. [Pg.254]

Moreover, the molecular structural, synthetic, and property nuances of these polymers illustrate many of the attributes, problems, and peculiarities of other inorganic macromolecular systems. Thus, they provide a "case study" for an understanding of what may lie ahead for other systems now being probed at the exploratory level. In short, an understanding of polyphosphazene chemistry forms the basis for an appreciation of a wide variety of related, inorganic-based macromolecular systems and of the relationship between inorganic polymer chemistry and the related fields of organic polymers, ceramic science, and metals. [Pg.250]

In this section we are going to look at some case studies to see how hplc experimental methods are developed. 1 am not going to give a long list of applications, because these are easy to find elsewhere, and sometimes do not make very interesting reading. Most textbooks on hplc have lists of applications, eg the book by Hamilton and Sewell (2nd Edn, Chapter 8), and applications can also be obtained from a number of journals (eg Analytical Chemistry annual reviews). [Pg.137]
