Chemicals storing

Before demolishing the old chemistry building on its c pus, a university called in a disposal service to get rid of old chemicals stored here and there. While this was not cheap, it was felt to be the safest and most efficient way to handle what could have been a potentially hazardous situation.

The amount of chemicals stored in each laboratory should be limited to a short term supply (e.g., enough for one week or month). This supply by it s nature will be facility dependent. In order to allow for the storage of larger amounts of chemicals, a specifically designed area should be used. The size and building materials are specified in the OSHA Standards, NFPA 30, and NFPA 45. 

In many of the chemical catastrophes of the past, compliance with PSM and RMP would have ensured that the affected processes/plants had been thoroughly surveyed for processes using or producing highly hazardous chemicals and extremely hazardous substances. This survey would have determined, of course, that the sites used covered chemicals in their process. Moreover, the survey would have noted the normal quantity of listed chemicals stored on the plant site at any given time. This survey would also have made note if any quantities of listed chemicals stored on the plant site exceeded the PSM and RMP threshold quantities (TQ). 

Earthquakes provide the ultimate test of the storage of incompatible chemicals and are sometimes followed by fires in chemical stores. Very few causes of ignition are found alkali metals halogen oxysalts in conjunction with strong acids and sulphuric or nitric acid and cellulose (wood flooring). These usually then ignite vapours of flammable solvents. 

It is perhaps too obvious to point out that everything we can see, touch, smell, and taste is a chemical or, more likely, a mixture of many different chemicals. In addition, there are many chemical substances in the environment that cannot be detected with the senses, but only indirectly, by the sophisticated instruments scientists have devised to look for them. The number of different chemicals in and on the earth is unknown, but is surely in the many millions. During the past 125 years scientists have been successful in creating hundreds of thousands of compounds that do not occur in nature, and they continue to add to the earth s chemical stores, although most of these synthesized chemicals never leave the research scientists laboratories.

Besides the facilities that manufacture the nitrophenols, the companies that process these compounds are listed in Table 4-1. Table 4-1 also shows the intended use and the maximum amounts of each chemical stored on site...

It was estimated that the chemicals stored in the room on the mezzanine fell down and and broke, releasing strong acids which then generated heat. When ethanol, methanol, benzene, and other flammable organic liquids mixed in, they caught fire. The chemicals stored there at that time were reported and are listed in Table 2.5... 

In many companies, the adoption of Combinatorial Chemistry greatly increases the numbers of chemicals stored and the number of bottles for each chemical. In the future, it may be necessary to reserve bottles (or parts thereof) for the synthesis of a given library. Otherwise, it is conceivable that a library synthesis is delayed by the delivery of a specific reagent and by the time that reagent is delivered, another reagent is out of stock.
