Chemical general aspects

Major bioprocess products are in the area of chemicals, pharmaceuticals, energy, food and agriculture, as depicted in Table 1.2. The table shows the general aspects, benefits and application of biological processes in these fields. 

This book contains what I call an interlude on the logic, the psychology, and the serendipity of scientific discoveries. Readers may wonder what the correlation is between that short Chapter 9 and diazo chemistry. The specific reason for including it was to elucidate the dediazoniation mechanism of aromatic diazonium ions, but I expanded this mechanistic discussion (Sec. 8.3) in the interlude by including general aspects originating in the philosophy of science as developed by Karl Popper and Thomas S. Kuhn, ideas which, in my opinion, should be better known by all scientists working in chemical research. 

Ozmen (2004, especially for chemical bonding) and Coll und Treagust (2003, chemistiy of metals) can help to develop a first overview. Numerous authors (e g. Pfund, 1975 Schldpke, 1991 Griffith and Preston, 1992 Mas et al., 1987) describe parallels between students conceptions and historical scientific ideas. Schldpke (1991), for example, points out similarities between students conceptions concerning properties of matter and ideas in alchemist thinking. Lee, Eichinger, Anderson, Berkheimer, and Blakeslee (1993) mentions semblances between the ideas of Aristotle and students conceptions about general aspects of the particulate nature of matter and the horror vacui . 

This section aims to present a brief overview of the most significant literature covering general aspects of common techniques used currently for natural food colorant analysis, and specifically current protocols applied to analyze minor natural food colorants whose chemical and technological properties are presented in Sections 2.3 and 7.2. We consider here only pure colorants or extracts that seek or have received approval for use as food additives in the United States and European Union. Legislative aspects are detailed in Sections 7.1 and 7.2. 

This chapter will be concerned with some general aspects of separation methods with specific reference to fine chemicals. Several textbooks and authoritative state-of-the-art reviews are available for individual methods of separations. 

The general theory of the quantum mechanical treatment of magnetic properties is far beyond the scope of this book. For details of the fundamental theory as well as on many technical aspects regarding the calculation of NMR parameters in the context of various quantum chemical techniques we refer the interested reader to the clear and competent discussion in the recent review by Helgaker, Jaszunski, and Ruud, 1999. These authors focus mainly on the Hartree-Fock and related correlated methods but briefly touch also on density functional theory. A more introductory exposition of the general aspects can be found in standard text books such as McWeeny, 1992, or Atkins and Friedman, 1997. As mentioned above we will in the following provide just a very general overview of this... 

For general aspects on sonochemistry the reader is referred to references [174,180], and for cavitation to references [175,186]. Part—I has three chapters that exclusively deal with General Aspects of pharmaceutical analysis. Chapter 1 focuses on the pharmaceutical chemicals and their respective purity and management. Critical information with regard to description of the finished product, sampling procedures, bioavailability, identification tests, physical constants and miscellaneous characteristics, such as ash values, loss on drying, clarity and color of solution, specific tests, limit tests of metallic and non-metallic impurities, limits of moisture content, volatile and non-volatile matter and lastly residue on ignition have also been dealt with. Each section provides adequate procedural details supported by ample typical examples from the Official Compendia. Chapter 2 embraces the theory and technique of quantitative analysis with specific emphasis on volumetric analysis, volumetric apparatus, their specifications, standardization and utility. It also includes biomedical analytical chemistry, colorimetric assays, theory and assay of biochemicals, such as urea, bilirubin, cholesterol and enzymatic assays, such as alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, salient features of radioimmunoassay and automated methods of chemical analysis. Chapter 3 provides special emphasis on errors in pharmaceutical analysis and their statistical validation. Since most of the physical and chemical properties of the chlorine oxyfluorides can be readily correlated with their molecular structure, we shall discuss briefly some of the more general aspects. 

Discussion of NMR data have been organized according to the nucleus and type of parameter. They are used to exemplify general aspects of NMR data and are followed by more specific examples. It has been decided as a general scheme that the volumes first issued shall deal with the pure chemistry of physiological products and with certain general aspects of the subject. Subsequent monographs will be devoted to such questions as the chemistry of special tissues and particular aspects of metabolism. So the series, if continued, will proceed from physiological chemistry to what may be now more properly termed chemical physiology. This will depend upon the success which the first series achieves, and upon the divisions of the subject which may be of interest at the time. 

The first article in this volume, by Jenny P. dusker, treats general aspects of metal liganding to functional groups in proteins. This article presents a detailed summary of the geometry of interaction of metals with the various chemical groups of proteins. It also presents, in Sections I through VIII, a lucid development of the principles and terminology of the field of metal-protein interactions. It is with these sections that the newcomer to the field of metalloproteins should start. 

Because of its chemical and practical significance, polymerization is exhaustively reviewed and excellent monographs,114-129 a multivolume encyclopedia,130 as well as the series Advances in Polymer Science,131 cover all aspects of the field. Consequently, our aim is not a comprehensive treatment, but to discuss the most important general aspects of the major types of polymerization of unsaturated hydrocarbons and to give selected examples of practical significance. 

The quantitative prediction of the stereochemistry of a chemical reaction by strain energies requires knowledge of the reaction mechanism, i.e., the selective intermediates and/or transition states involved, and an accurate force field for the transient species. As discussed above, these are two demanding problems and so far there are no reports of studies in this area that have used molecular mechanics for quantitative predictions at the same level of accuracy as for conformational analyses. The application of empirical force field calculations to the design of asymmetric transformations clearly is a worthy task, and some examples of studies in this area have been discussed above. On the basis of two examples we will now discuss some general aspects highlighting the limitations of the qualitative considerations emerging horn molecular mechanics calculations for the interpretation and support of assumed reaction pathways. 

The pharmacologic treatment of parasitic infections is a complex and extensive topic. In this limited space, it is difficult to describe the many species of each parasite, all the diseases caused by parasites, and the chemical methods currently available to selectively destroy various fungi, protozoa, and helminths in humans. Consequently, the general aspects of each type of parasitic infection are reviewed briefly, followed by the primary drugs used to treat specific fungal, protozoal, and helminthic infections.
