Change covert

Aerosol surface area is likely to be variable even within a remote marine air mass. Previous MBL aerosol studies describe changes in aerosol concentration and composition due to entrainment from the free troposphere (Bates et al., 1998, 2001 Covert et al., 1998). Raes et al. (1997) found an observable link between vertical transport patterns and aerosol variability in the MBL specifically in the Aitken mode (<0.2/u.m). Hence entrainment of aerosol from the free troposphere appears to occur frequently, even in remote MBL air masses. In addition, aerosols have the capacity to travel great distances in the free troposphere, before being entrained into the MBL.

The equation shows that alcohol in the form of ethanol reacts with an orange solution of potassium dichromate to produce a green solution of chromic sulfate. The source of alcohol is the suspect s breath. More alcohol produces a greater color change. The breath analyzer measures this color change and coverts this measurement into an amount of alcohol in the blood.

Changes to passive safety systems such as the firewater and flare headers can lead to covert safety problems. As additional equipment is installed, these systems can be overloaded. The capacity of the flare system should be checked, but, if it is not, and since such systems are passive, there are no indications that they have become overloaded until they are called upon to operate. 

Some covert failures are not anticipated because they are unusual. For example, one chemical plant used a series of large, liquid-filled reactors. A noble metal compound catalyst, which was in solution, was fed continuously into the reactors. Over a period of years some of noble metal came out of solution, and slowly formed a metal lining that was steadily growing in thickness on the inside walls of the reactors. The process and economic consequences of this problem had been analyzed and accepted. However, no one had considered the civil and structural engineering implications of this uncontrolled change the fact that the reactors were slowly getting heavier, and possibly overloading their foundations. 

Covert change sometimes occurs in the form of a ripple effect through utility systems. If a facility has multiple operating areas, each of which is connected to a common utility system, then each area may make properly controlled changes to its own operation but may not realize that it is having a system effect. An example of a ripple effect change that can occur in a utility system is shown in Figure 10.1. 

As well as the obvious overt responses to injury-released chemicals, there are other responses that are not immediately obvious to an observer. These covert responses include learning to recognize predators, which can only be detected by experimental analysis, and induced morphological change, which requires physical measurement after the passage of tens of days (Stabell Lwin 1997). 

T-RFLP has been used to study microbial diversity in contaminated sediments and to monitor changes in community composition following exposure to pollutants. In a study by Covert and Moran [77], the structure of bacterial communities growing at high-molecular weight (HMW) and at low-molecular weight (LMW) dissolved organic carbon was compared by T-RFLP. 

Yet culture is not only deep because it is so fundamental and covert, it is also immensely patterned and therefore related to everything we think, perceive and do. When attempting to change one belief, we have to change many related ones and much that has been built upon these. The large quantities of basic anxiety and the process of mourning mentioned here are quite understandable when such basic belief networks are taken apart.

Since the last edition, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health has changed its corporate membership structure to a single level, thus eliminating the separate levels of examination and the need for guidance on the particular sections of the book that need to be studied. To match the new membership structure, the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health has revised its syllabus and this has been covert in the updated text.
