Ceramic tile processing, materials

The aim of the paper was to describe the process of grinding of raw materials used in the industrial-scale production of ceramic tiles, by applying the theory of statistical moments. Grinding was performed in industrial ball mills in ceramic tile factories Ceramika Paradyz Ltd. and Opoczno S.A. The ball mills operated in a batch mode. A mixture of feldspars and clay was comminuted. Its composition and fractions depended on the conditions that should be satisfied by raw materials for the production of wall tiles (monoporosis and stoneware) and terracotta. The ground material was subjected to a particle size analysis. Results of the analysis were used in the calculation of relationships applied in the theory of statistical moments. The main parameters, i.e. zero moment of the first order and central moments of the third and fourth order were determined. The values of central moments were used in the calculation of skewness and flatness coefficients. Additionally, changes of mean particle size in time were determined. [Pg.263]

During the past 5 years, standards that may be used to calibrate reflec-tometer systems indirectly in reflectance mode have been developed. All these standards incorporate stable rare earth oxides, either as powders or as the oxides protected by a matrix of ceramic or polymer. The initial standard of this type was produced by NIST under the designation SRM-1920. The standard was a mixture of holmium, erbium, and dysprosium oxide in a quartz-covered powder cell and was meant for usage in the near-IR only. J. Verrill at NPL has produced a holmium oxide-doped glazed ceramic tile for use as a standard. This material suffers from some peak broadening and shifting, likely due to the high temperature of process of the ceramic. [Pg.263]

In the industrial world bricks are mostly made in an automated production process. After the raw materials have obtained the correct composition and plasticity, the forming process follows. In The Netherlands hand moulding, press moulding and extrusion moulding are applied in coarse ceramics. Occasionally the stamping press is still used, mainly in the manufacture of roof tiles. [Pg.207]

The traditional or conventional ceramics are generally in monolithic form. These include bricks, pottery, tiles and a variety of art objects. The advanced or high-performance monolithic ceramic materials represent a new and improved class of ceramic materials where, frequently, some sophisticated chemical processing route is used to obtain them. Generally, their characteristics are based on the high quality and purity of the raw materials used. The efflorescence is not a phenomenon noticeable only in the case of concrete or mortar, it means occnrring in cement paste. It is also known in the case of ceramics, especially bricks and roof tiles, which are not bonded with cement mortar. Efflorescence relates generally to the porous materials in which the transport of mass, primarily of liquids, can occur. Plastic deformation of a moldable powder-additive mixture is employed in several forming methods for ceramics. Extrusion of a moist clay-water mixture is used extensively in the traditional ceramics sector for forming components with a regular cross section (e.g., solid and hollow cylinders, tiles, and bricks). The method is also used to form some oxide ceramics for advanced applications (e.g., catalyst supports, capacitor tubes and electrical insulators). A recent development is the repeated co-extrusion of a particle-filled thermoplastic polymer to produce textured microstructures or fine-scale structures. Injection molding of a ceramic-polymer mixture is a potentially useful method for the mass production of small ceramic articles with complex shapes.
