This specification covers horizontal, end suction, vertically split, single-stage centrifugal pumps with top centerline discharge and hack pullout feature.

Use a double. suction impeller. Convert an end suetion centrifugal pump into a split ease horizontal design. 

The primary pump types for the chemical industry for horizontal and vertical inline applications have been standardized in ANSI B-123, ANSI Std B73.1M for horizontal end suction centrifugal pumps, and ANSI B73.2M for vertical inline centrifugal pumps. The standards are in a continuous process of upgrading to suit requirements of industry and the manufacturers. The API-610 standard is primarily a heavy duty application, such as is used for the refinery and chemical industry requirements. This is the only true world pump [21] standard, although the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is studying such an improved design [20].

Centrifugal pumps can be further classified by physical design or axially split, radially split and whether the axis of rotation of the impeller(s) is vertical or horizontal. 

The location of measurement points for centrifugal pumps depends on whether the pump is classified as end suction or horizontal split-case. 

The single-stage, horizontal, overhung, centrifugal pump is by far the most commonly used type in the chemical process industry. Other types are used where a high head or other special process considerations are specified.

Horizontal centrifugal pumps should provide 150% of the rated capacity at 65% of the rated pressure, with a shutoff head of not more than 120% of the rated pressure. This pump should be used only when suction supply is under a positive head. Suction pipes should be designed to preclude the formation of air bubbles. A characteristic curve for a rated fire water pump is shown in Figure 7-15. 

Centrifugal compressors must operate on a curve, just like centrifugal pumps. A typical curve is shown in Fig. 28.3. The horizontal axis is actual cubic feet per minute (ACFM). This is analogous to GPM, used on the horizontal (x) axis of centrifugal pump curves. The vertical axis is H (poly tropic feet of head). This is analogous to the feet of head used on the vertical (y) axis of the centrifugal pump curve.
