Each pump is a centrifugal single-stage glandless one with a canned two-speed synchronous motor intended to circulate primary coolant. The pump capacity is 870 m%, the head is 0.38 MPa (at high speed) and the consumed power is not more than 155 kW. Leaks are completely excluded due to the pump design. Continuous gas removal from the upper part of the pump is provided during operation. 

The main circulating pump is a canned, centrifugal, single-stage, vertical pump with a shielded, double-speed (double-winding) asynchronous electric motor. 

The electric pump consists of an electric motor and a centrifugal, single-stage pump integrated into a single unit. 

This specification covers horizontal, end suction, vertically split, single-stage centrifugal pumps with top centerline discharge and hack pullout feature. 

An example of a typical turboexpander is shown in Fig. 29-46. Radial-flow turbines are normally single-stage and have combination impulse-reaction blades, and the rotor resembles a centrifugal-pump impeller. The gas is jetted tangentially into the outer periphery of the rotor and flows radially inward to the eye, from which the gas is jetted backward by the angle of the rotor blades so that it leaves the rotor without spin and flows axially away.

Another centrifugal pump classification is whether the pump is a single-stage pump (the pressure head is developed by a single impeller) or a multistage pump (the pressure head is developed by two or more impellers). 

Figure 3-65 gives the upper limits of specific speeds of single-stage, single and double-suction centrifugal pumps handling clear water at 85°F at sea level [22].

No matter the duty (utilities excepted), most boiler plant systems employ electric motor-driven, single-stage or multistage centrifugal pumps to supply FW. These may be of conventional design or derivations such as a turbine pump. However, steam-driven reciprocating FW pumps (steam pumps) are still employed in some countries and for certain smaller applications. 

The single-stage, horizontal, overhung, centrifugal pump is by far the most commonly used type in the chemical process industry. Other types are used where a high head or other special process considerations are specified.

Injection pump. An injection pump is used to force the waste into the injection zone, although in very porous formations, such as cavernous limestone, the hydrostatic pressure of the waste column in the well is sufficient. The type of pump is determined primarily by the well-head pressures required, the volume of liquid to be injected, and the corrosiveness of the waste. Single-stage centrifugal pumps are used in systems that require well-head pressures up to about 10.5 kg/cm2 (150 psi), and multiplex piston pumps are used to achieve higher injection pressures.
