Shrinkage, tackiness and increased brittleness due to the migration and subsequent evaporation of plasticiser from between the cellulose acetate chains, is also a frequent cause of degradation. The degradation of some plasticisers has been shown to increase acidity of cellulose acetate-containing materials. Triphenyl phosphate, used as a plasticiser for cellulose acetate since the 1940s, decomposes to form diphenyl phosphate and phenol. Diphenyl phosphate is a strong acid so it is likely to accelerate the deacetylation of cellulose acetate. [Pg.202]

The cellulose molecule contains three hydroxyl groups which can react and leave the chain backbone intact. These alcohol groups can be esterified with acetic anhydride to form cellulose acetate. This polymer is spun into the fiber acetate rayon. Similarly, the alcohol groups in cellulose react with CS2 in the presence of strong base to produce cellulose xanthates. When extruded into fibers, this material is called viscose rayon, and when extruded into sheets, cellophane. In both the acetate and xanthate formation, some chain degradation also occurs, so the resulting polymer chains are shorter than those in the starting cellulose. [Pg.18]

Acid Recovery. In the manufacture of every pound of cellulose acetate, about 4 lb of acetic acid is produced in 30-35 percent aqueous solution. The accumulated acid contains a small amount of suspended fines and some dissolved cellulose esters. To remove the suspended material, the acid is passed slowly through settling tanks. Then it is mixed with organic solvents, so that the acid becomes concentrated in an organic layer, which is decanted. Distillation separates the acid from the organic solvent. [Pg.450]
