Caustic Soda Lye

Because of thek flash pokits, nitroparaftins are classified as flammable Hquids under DOT regulations (ha2ard class 3, PG III). Nitromethane and nitroethane tires can be extinguished with water, CO2, foam, or class ABC dry chemical extinguishers. Nitroparaftins should not be exposed to dry caustic soda, lye, or similar alkaline materials. [Pg.102]

Atznatron) n. caustic soda. laug6) /. caustic soda lye, caustic soda solution. -Idsung) /. caustic soda solution, -stiick) n. piece of caustic soda. [Pg.38]

A mixture of 100 parts of N-p-chloroethyl-N-benzylaniline and 100 parts of freshly distilled pyrrolidine are heated to boiling under reflux cooling for about 10 h. Diluted aqueous caustic soda lye is added to the reaction mixture until it shows an alkaline reaction. The reaction product formed and unchanged pyrrolidine are extracted with ether. The extract thus obtained is a subjected to a distillation. After the ether has evaporated, there is produced N-(p-N-phenyl-N-benzylaminoethyl)pyrrolidine, which boils at from 198° to 205°C under 1 mm pressure. [Pg.1841]

To control the reaction rate, the pH value is measured continuously, which is re-adjusted by adding formic acid. When the end-point of the reaction is reached, determined by a solubility test with water, the reaction mixture is brought to pH 7 with caustic soda lye. The condensation is complete and the resin is evaporated under reduced pressure. The vapor is condensed in a tubular condenser and collected in a receiver. [Pg.117]

When absorption of hydrogen is finished, the separated palladium is filtered and the alcohol distilled until nearly to dryness. The residue is made alkaline and extracted with ether. The ether is distilled and the residue extracted in dilute hydrochloric acid. The portion insoluble in acid is separated by means of ether and the base is precipitated by means of caustic soda lye, extracted and fractionated. At 140° C. at 1 mm. pressure colourless triethoxyphenylethylamine distills. The hydrochloride forms white crystals soluble in water and of melting point 178—179°... [Pg.31]

In Atul s process of production of para-cresol, toluene is sulfonated with 98-102% H2SO4 to produce a mixture of isomeric toluene sulfonic acids. The acid mixture is neutralized with CaC03/Na2C03 and then fused with caustic soda lye (70% NaOH) with 3-5% KOH to maintain the fluidity of the molten mass. By heating the mixture around 330°C for... [Pg.29]

The secondary cells are of two types horizontal and vertical. In the secondary cells the amalgam is brought in contact with water, where the sodium electrochemically reacts with the latter to form caustic soda lye and hydrogen gas. The amalgam acts as the anode and graphite as the cathode. The sodium hydroxide lye acts as the electrolyte. [Pg.22]

When chemistry was a young science and the number of known compounds was small, it was possible to memorize their names. Many of the names were derived from their physical appearance, properties, origin, or application—for example, milk of magnesia, laughing gas, limestone, caustic soda, lye, washing soda, and baking soda. [Pg.53]

Santonate of Soda. Put into a flask, 2 ounce.s santuninic acid, 4 fluid ounces pure caustic soda lye. and 12 fluid ounces distilled water. Heat the flask in a sand-bath or over a stove to 7(P or 80 Fahr., until the santonine solutionis complete which usually requires about half an hour then remove... [Pg.287]

Highway lamps often incorporate Na arcs, which produce a bright yellow glow. A few examples of the uses of sodium compounds are NaOH, called caustic soda, lye, or soda lye (used for production of rayon, cleansers, textiles, soap, paper, and many polymers) ... [Pg.1041]

Crude Gottorirseed Oil.—The deep colouring matter of crude cotton-seed oil, together with the mucilaginous and resinous principles, are removed by refining with caustic soda lye. [Pg.42]

Having determined the amount of free acidity, the quantity of caustic soda lye necessary to neutralise it is diluted with water to 12° or 15° Tw. (8° or 10° B,), and the refining process carried out in three stages. The oil is placed in a suitable tank and heated by means of a closed steam coil to 100° F. (38° C.), a third of the necessary weak caustic soda lye added in a fine stream or bj means of a sprinkler, and the whole well agitated with a mechanical agitator or by blowing a current of air through a pipe laid on the bottom of the tank. [Pg.42]

Caustic soda lye is sometimes admixed, to the extent of one-fourth, with potash lye to keep the soap firmer during hot weather, but it requires great care, as a slight excess of soda gives soft soap a bad appearance and a tendency to separate. [Pg.48]

The fatty materials, carefully strained and freed from particles of dirt and fibre, are boiled with weak caustic soda lye until combination has taken place. Saponification being complete, the solution of salt is added, then the carbonate of soda solution, and finally the silicate of soda solution, after which the soap is boiled. When thoroughly mixed, steam is shut off, and the soap is ready for framing. [Pg.49]

The marbled hydrated soap is made from cocoa-nut oil or a mixture of palm-kernel oil and cocoa-nut oil with the aid of caustic soda lye 82Tw. (20° B.). As soon as saponification is complete, the brine and carbonate of soda solution are added, and the pan allowed to rest. [Pg.49]

When the action has started, caustic soda lye of a greater density, 29° to 33° Tw. (18° to 20° B.), is frequently added, with continued boiling, in small quantities as long as it is being absorbed, which is ascertained by taking out samples from time to time and examining them. [Pg.50]

Caustic soda lye (32 ° Tw., 20° B.) is gradually added until the soap is again opened or grained, and boiling continued by the use of the i dry steam coil. As soon as the caustic soda lye is absorbed, another... [Pg.51]

The rosin may be added to the soap-pan after a previous partial saponification with soda ash, and removal of colouring matter, and finally saponified with caustic soda lye, or, as is more generally adopted, as a rosin change. The pan is opened with caustic soda lye and saturation of the rosin takes place rapidly when completely saponified it is grained with salt, and the coloured lye allowed to deposit and finally withdrawn. [Pg.55]
