Another equally important consideration before development of a determinative or confirmatory method is an understanding of the chemical properties of the analyte. Such an understanding becomes the cornerstone of a successful method since the unique chemical properties of each analyte provide the basis for isolation and detection schemes. Table 1 lists some of the important chemical properties that could be considered. For example, knowing the or p/fb of an analyte could influence the choice of a liquid-liquid extraction scheme, solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge, mobile phase pH, or mass spectrometric ionization. Knowing the overall polarity of the analyte can be very helpful in the evaluation of an extraction or separation. Currently, computational methods are available to obtain an estimate of the logP... [Pg.301]

In summary, the development of materials for the extraction of pesticides from water samples has progressed from simple liquid-liquid extraction for the principal active compound to sophisticated SPE media capable of exclusively trapping the target pesticide and metabolites selectively. The development of alkyl bonded phase silica cartridges and extraction disks combined with on-line extraction techniques is currently the principal means used for the extraction and trace enrichment of pesticides and metabolites from water. [Pg.826]

The major features for advanced photo-systems relative to the base film are a small-size thrust cartridge and return inside the cartridge. These features require low core-set curl values and high mechanical strength. The cellulose triacetate (CTA), polycarbonate and PET materials currently used in the photographic industry are not able to satisfy these requirements. Some newly developed film materials, such as modified-PET and syndiotactic polystyrene, were also unable to satisfy such requirements. It is known that annealing films just below the Tg (BTA treatment) could reduce core-set curl tendencies. BTA treatments of... [Pg.353]

The Novolizer (Viatris, Germany) is unique among the devices because it is reloadable. It uses plastic cartridges filled with up to 200 doses of the medication that are inserted into the DPI body. The device is currently marketed in some European countries. As with most of the recent developments, the device has both acoustic and visual control features. [Pg.251]

Current trends in firearms and ammunition are toward lighter and easier to carry firearms and ammunition. These include the use of various plastics in the manufacture of firearms and some large, well-known manufacturers are experimenting with the development of caseless ammunition (combustible cartridge cases and primers) which, if viable, will involve major design changes in the mechanism of firearms. [Pg.93]

The US company Millennium Cell has developed a prototype fuel cell used to power an IBM ThinkPad. Currently, the prototype runs for only 3 h, but Millennium aims to increase the running time to 8 h. The company expects the fuel cell to cost approximately 150, about the same price as a standard laptop battery. NEC, a Japanese company, has multiple versions of its DMFC laptop prototype. The most current model, released in October 2005, is 20% smaller than the 2004 model and has a power output density of 70 milliwatts (mW) per square centimeter, a 40% improvement on the previous model. One 250 Cm methanol cartridge can power the laptop for 10 h. The company plans to commercialize the laptop in 2007. [Pg.134]

Finally, no discussion of this topic would be complete without mention of the place of automation in sample preparation and its impact on this activity. Laboratory robotics initial focus was on the automation of sample preparation and it is used in that way in many laboratories, but islands of automation have developed within certain organizations where certain portions of sample preparation such as SPE are automated. This initial automation used cartridge-based sorbents, but current applications involved the use of microtiter-based formats. [Pg.2079]

HBC cartridge fuses As the name might imply, these HBC (high breaking capacity) cartridge fuses are for protecting circuits where extremely high-fault currents may develop such as on industrial installations or distribution systems. [Pg.421]
