The appHcation that has led to increased interest in carbon dioxide pipeline transport is enhanced oil recovery (see Petroleum). Carbon dioxide flooding is used to Hberate oil remaining in nearly depleted petroleum formations and transfer it to the gathering system. An early carbon dioxide pipeline carried by-product CO2 96 km from a chemical plant in Louisiana to a field in Arkansas, and two other pipelines have shipped CO2 from Colorado to western Texas since the 1980s. But for power station applications, the thermal efficiency is not the only measure of the performance of a plant. While a new type of plant may involve some reduction in running costs due to improved thermal efficiency, it may also involve additional capital costs. The cost of electricity produced is the crucial criterion within the overall economics, and this depends not only on the thermal efficiency and capital costs, but also on the price of fuel, operational and maintenance costs, and the taxes imposed. Yet another factor, which has recently become important, is the production by gas turbine plants of greenhouse gases (mainly carbon dioxide) which contribute to global warming. Many countries are now considering the imposition of a special tax on the amount of CO2 produced by a power plant, and this may adversely affect the economics. So consideration of a new plant in future will involve not only the factors listed above but also the amount of CO2 produced per unit of electricity together with the extra taxes that may have to be paid. [Pg.131]

The Vision 21 program is focused on new concepts for coal-based energy production where modular plants could be configured to produce a variety of fuels and chemicals depending on market needs with virtually no environmental impact outside the plant s footprint. Membranes would be used to separate oxygen from air for the gasification process and to separate hydrogen and carbon dioxide from coal gas. [Pg.198]

A few ammonia plants have been located where a hydrogen off-gas stream is available from a nearby methanol or ethylene operation (e.g., Canadian plants at Kitimat, BC and Joffre, Alberta). Gas consumption at such operations range from 25 million to 27 million BTU per tonne of ammonia, depending on specific circumstances. Perhaps more important, the capital cost of such a plant is only about 50% of the cost of a conventional plant of similar capacity because only the synthesis portion of the ammonia plant is required. However, by-product carbon dioxide is not produced and downstream urea production is therefore not possible56. [Pg.117]

More than 100,000 species of animals, most of them insects, depend on the producers life. Mankind cannot survive without green plants and their capability of building up carbohydrates from just water and carbon dioxide in the chloroplasts of leaves by the use of solar energy. Agriculture and horticulture have made use of this capacity since prehistoric ages and forestry has developed from the uncontrolled use of firewood and timber for houses, ships> tools, and furniture to a planned production of renewable raw materials. [Pg.553]
