Campus resources

Investigate a university near you for campus resources designed to aid entrepreneurs. Write a list of resources, services, funding sources, and other aid that the university can help you obtain. 

Better Numerous free services, well-trained tutors, and a variety of useful learning aids make the Study Skills Center a valuable campus resource. 

Another on-campus resource is your school s alumni office. Often, this department keeps a list of alumni and their current careers. It s worth the effort to go through this list. If an alumna works for a company that interests you, you may have found a key person to put in your network. Networking will be discussed, in detail, later in this chapter. 

Introduction to campus resources / technology (computer labs)... 

Vastly expand the use of existing on-campus resources. Integrate the talents and course material of supportive, carefully selected faculty in complementary academic programs such as business, communication, history, law, philosophy, political science and psychology. 

As time goes on, one can grow with the system by considering networking the CD-ROM-based resources and/or setting up other, strategically located TICs on one s campus. The important concept here is that we wish to make the superb new PC-based information products as available as we can to interested scientists.

The research projects have contributed our campus environmental resource assessment (similar projects are now managed by our campus Office of Sustainability) (Clugston and Calder 1999). The students choose a research project that is of interest to them and that connects to their daily lives. Project teams are typically four to six students and are set the first day of class. Since science majors occasionally enroll in the course, they are distributed among the groups. The groups...

Once you have a general topic (and perhaps have some research questions in mind), your next step is familiarizing yourself with the school or public library where you may do all or part of your research. Most college libraries today have both print and electronic resources to offer researchers, as well as access to the Internet. Your library most likely has an online central information system, which may include a catalog of its holdings, a number of selected databases, gateways to other libraries, and other kinds of resources. With appropriate computer connections, this system may be accessed from other places on or off campus, which is handy for those times when you cannot be in the library. 

Because employers today may receive hundreds of applications for a single job, it is important to present yourself as positively as possible in your letter and r6sum6. If your campus has a career center, seek it out as your first step. Career centers often have extraordinary resources sample cover letters and resumes, hints for interviews, information on electronic job searching, and much more. Because there are multiple ways to arrange a resume, you will find it useful to familiarize yourself with some representative samples before you begin working on your own. 

I know a student who wants to be an artist. She is very obviously an artist and will be a good one—she has already had several modest local exhibits. Meanwhile she is growing as a well-rounded person and taking humanistic subjects that will enrich the inner resources out of which her art will grow. But her father is strongly opposed. He thinks that an artist is a dumb thing to be. The student vacillates and tries to please everybody. She keeps up with her art somewhat furtively and takes some of the dumb courses her father wants her to take—at least they are dumb courses for her. She is a free spirit on a campus of tense students—no small achievement in itself—and she deserves to follow her muse. 

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world s largest biomedical library containing nearly 6 million books, reports, journals, photographs, manuscripts, and computer images.Located on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, this national resource houses material on the topics of medicine, healthcare, and biomedical technology. Information on physical, life, and social sciences is also a part of the NLM. In addition to storing this immense collection of medical literature, the NLM operates more than 40 online databases,the most popular of which is MEDLINE, the world s largest up-to-date online collection of biomedical... 

A Middle East Virtual Campus should be established to facihtate exchanges of ideas among Middle East scientists. Web-based resources are needed, including a directory of laboratory equipment and expertise plus weblinks connecting to freely available databases and software. 

But if you choose to challenge yourself and discover the best way to get the information you need, you will be a step ahead of fhe crowd. Call the human resources department or public relations office at the organization or company in which you re interested and ask them if they ever interview at your college or university. Or, go to the campus placement office for the same information. Even if you ve already graduated, your college will likely give you access to their resources. 

On-campus interviews are screening interviews to decide which candidates will be invited back to the company for further interviews. A company interviewer may be your potential supervisor, human resources personnel, or an employee in a position similar to the one for which you are inferviewing. Companies usually fry to include one employee who graduates from your school.
