Calcium carbimide has effects and uses similar to those of disulfiram, and has been used in the treatment of chronic alcoholism (1). Its alternative name, cyanamide, has also been used to designate carbimide, which is used in veterinary medicine. [Pg.598]

Calcium carbimide has been linked to liver damage (3) (SED-12,1244), but caution is needed in attributing liver damage in alcoholic patients to drugs. [Pg.598]

Calcium carbimide has been linked to skin reactions (4). [Pg.598]

A 37-year-old man developed itchy erythema on his trunk and legs after taking calcium carbimide (dose not specified) for 3 days. He had an eosinophilia of 22%. Patch-testing with calcium carbimide was positive. The eruption subsided after withdrawal. [Pg.598]

CALCIUM CARBIMIDE (156-62-7) Combustible solid. Dust or powder forms explosive mixture with air. Contact with water, steam causes decomposition, forming acetylene gas, ammonia, and calcium hydrogen cyanamide. Violent reaction with strong oxidizers, fluorine, strong acids. Incompatible with barium peroxide, boric acid, dry hydrogen, hydrogen peroxide. Contact with all solvents tested also causes decomposition. [Pg.244]

SYNONYMS AIzodef, calcium carbimide, calcium salt, lime nitrogen, cyanimide, nitro-... [Pg.34]

Alcohol is also related to criminal activities. Chronic alcoholics have long been treated with alcohol-deterrent drugs such as disulfiram (Antabuse) and calcium carbimide (Temposil), which can produce abstinence rates of more than 50%. These drugs alter the way in which the body breaks down alcohol. A person taking antahuse who consumes alcohol will have a violent physical reaction to the alcohol - nausea, vomiting and rapid changes in blood pressure occur. [Pg.115]

Synonyms/Trade Names Calcium carbimide, Cyanamide, Lime nitrogen, Nitrogen lime [Note Cyanamide is also a synonym for Hydrogen cyanamide, NH2CN ]... [Pg.47]

Alcohol causes a disulilram-like reaction in patients taking calcium carbimide. Calcium carbimide has been used as an alcohol deterrent. [Pg.57]

Calcium carbimide interacts with alcohol in a similar way to disulfiram and by a similar mechanism (see Alcohol + Disulfiram , p.61). Both of these drugs bind to aldehyde dehydrogenase, but calcium carbimide is said to have fewer adverse effects because it does not bind to dopamine beta hydroxylase. However, marked cardiovascular effects and fatalities have occurred in those who drank alcohol while taking calcium carbimide. Like disulfiram it is used to deter alcoholics from continuing to drink. ... [Pg.57]

Phenytoin serum levels are markedly and rapidly increased by disulfiram. Phenytoin toxicity can develop. There is evidence that phenobarbital and carbamazepine are not affected by disulfiram, and that phenytoin is not affected by calcium carbimide. [Pg.520]

A study in 4 patients found that calcium carbimide 50 mg daily for a week followed by 100 mg daily for 2 weeks had no effect on serum phenytoin levels. ... [Pg.520]

Carbamazepine and phenobarbital do not appear to interact with disulfiram and calcium carbimide does not appear to interact with phenytoin. [Pg.520]
