Heat a few drops of the mustard oil with yellow mercuric oxide and notice the iriitating smell of phenyl carbimide. [Pg.160]

Among the reactions appended to this preparation, the foi-mation of phenylcaibiniide from phenyl mustard oil is desciibetl. It should be noted that phenyl carbimide, like the thiocarbiniide, unites with ammonia, amines, and more especially with alcohols and phenols. The bases yield urea derivatives the alcohols and phenols foim urethanes. [Pg.282]

In many of its reactions hydrocyanic acid behaves as the nitrile of formic add H.CN. Many facts, in particular its great chemical and pharmacological similarity to the isonitriles >C = NR suggest another constitution, namely, that of carbimide >C =NH with bivalent carbon. The addition reactions of the nitriles (see above), which reactions are also characteristic of hydrocyanic acid, can equally well be explained on the basis of this second structural formula. In the nitrile form it is at the triple bond between carbon and nitrogen that addition takes place. In the methylene form this occurs at the two free valencies of the bivalent carbon atom, e.g. ... [Pg.139]

Calcium carbimide has effects and uses similar to those of disulfiram, and has been used in the treatment of chronic alcoholism (1). Its alternative name, cyanamide, has also been used to designate carbimide, which is used in veterinary medicine. [Pg.598]

Calcium carbimide has been linked to liver damage (3) (SED-12,1244), but caution is needed in attributing liver damage in alcoholic patients to drugs. [Pg.598]

Calcium carbimide has been linked to skin reactions (4). [Pg.598]

A 37-year-old man developed itchy erythema on his trunk and legs after taking calcium carbimide (dose not specified) for 3 days. He had an eosinophilia of 22%. Patch-testing with calcium carbimide was positive. The eruption subsided after withdrawal. [Pg.598]

The first type of pharmacotherapy for alcohol problems uses compounds that alter the metabolism of alcohol if it is consumed. Peachey and Annis (1985) reviewed these compounds, which they called the alcohol-sensitizing drugs. The most popular of these are disulfiram (trade name Antabuse) and carbimide (Temposil). Antabuse has been in use in the United States since 1948. Temposil, on the other hand, is not available in the United States and is used less frequently overall than Antabuse (NIAAA, 2000). In any case, use of both agents in treatment is based on similar assumptions regarding the psychological effects of their chemical action. [Pg.391]
