Nitrile mbber finds broad application in industry because of its excellent resistance to oil and chemicals, its good flexibility at low temperatures, high abrasion and heat resistance (up to 120°C), and good mechanical properties. Nitrile mbber consists of butadiene—acrylonitrile copolymers with an acrylonitrile content ranging from 15 to 45% (see Elastomers, SYNTHETIC, NITRILE RUBBER). In addition to the traditional applications of nitrile mbber for hoses, gaskets, seals, and oil well equipment, new applications have emerged with the development of nitrile mbber blends with poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). These blends combine the chemical resistance and low temperature flexibility characteristics of nitrile mbber with the stability and ozone resistance of PVC. This has greatly expanded the use of nitrile mbber in outdoor applications for hoses, belts, and cable jackets, where ozone resistance is necessary. [Pg.186]

Cables are available in a variety of constmctions and materials, in order to meet the requirements of industry specifications and the physical environment. For indoor usage, such as for Local Area Networks (LAN), the codes require that the cables should pass very strict fire and smoke release specifications. In these cases, highly dame retardant and low smoke materials are used, based on halogenated polymers such as duorinated ethylene—propylene polymers (like PTFE or FEP) or poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Many materials are subject to deterioration by ultraviolet light (UV). particularly many of the plastics and fiberglass materials. Ethylene-vinylacetate blends with PVC have been widely used in Europe as permanent polymeric plasticizers for PVC. Low cost and good weatherability of these blends permitted their use in window profiles, cable jacketing and other outdoor applications. Ethylene vinylacetate copolymer with 65-75% vinyl acetate content is quite miscible with PVC exhibiting a single T for the blend [Hammer, 1971 Ranby, 1975 Rellick and Runt, 1985]. Carbon black is used as a stabilizer in a limited number offormulations where color is not a criterioiL It not only absorbs light, but it can also react with free-radical species that might be formed. Miscellaneous Stabilizers. A variety of other stabihzers are vaguely mentioned in the literature, mainly by vendors. Polyols and organo-nitrogen compounds may be added to complex iron impurities in fillers and keep them from catalyzing degradation of PVC. Other additives are more secretive and their benefits less clear. Bisphenol is added to wire and cable insulation to stabilize the plasticizer rather than the PVC.
