Figure 11. Distribution with depth of U/Th normahzed to the bedroek in two lateritic profiles of the Kaya toposeqnenee, about 300m apart (Burkina Faso) (Deqnineey et al. 2002 submitted). One profile is located downhill (Kaya 5) and the other one at the top of a residual hill (Kaya 1). The laterite consists of an uppermost fermginous hardtop, an intermediate pink clay nnit and a lowest pistachio unit. For Kaya 5 profile, U/Th distribntion shows a relative enrichment of U in the nppermost horizon and depletion in the lower part of the profile. This kind of distribution is quite conunon in weathering profiles bnt is not systematic as illnstrated by the Kaya 1 profile. In the latter, a relative depletion of U is observed in the npper part and a U-enriched level in the intermediate horizon. This lateral difference in U distribution is explained by vertical redistribntion of U from the ferruginons top to the nnderlying horizons, whose intensity is controlled by the evolntion of the iron oxides from the nppermost horizons (Dequincey et al. snbmitted). This disastrous consequence comes about because intellectuals in less developed countries (LDCs), far from treating the preoccupations of the residents of economically developed countries as affectations of the very rich, adopt these same worries. Craven and Stewart provide an instructive analysis of risk issues in France and the francophone African state of Burkina Faso.1 The medical, environmental, geographical, and political problems of Burkina Faso are radically different from those in France, but intellectuals in Burkina Faso and college students in France responded similarly to questions about risk. In fact, intellectuals in Burkina Faso had borrowed concerns relevant only to France, and their opinions were reflected in the national media. Thus,... [Pg.270]

In Burkina Faso, experience in 1660 women over 4 years has been critically reviewed (18). There were 247 withdrawals before the fourth year, for various reasons, including cycle disorders (60 withdrawals), unspecified medical reasons (n = 53), personal objections (n = 47), weight gain (n = 14), and contraceptive failure (n = 2). Menstrual disorders, including amenorrhea, spotting, and hypermenorrhea, occurred in 51% of the cases. The... [Pg.255]

It is now March, typically a cool and sunny time in the valley, but it has been raining for the past month. Many counties in Northern California have been declared to be in a state of emergency because of flooding. As I look out my window wondering if I should skip my daily trip to the pool and swim home instead, I hear a knock at the door. Rebecca, my hardworking and creative assistant, walks in. She takes a look out the window and says, Isn t California supposed to be a sunny state I mean when my roommate convinced me to move here she told me it would be sunnier and warmer than Wisconsin. It s more like being back in Burkina Faso in the middle of the rainy season. ... [Pg.148]

I knew that Rebecca served in the Peace Corps as a health volunteer in sub-Saharan Africa before moving out to Davis, but we had not yet had a chance to talk about her experiences. I thought her comment was kind of funny because Burkina Faso was known to be hot and dry. So I ask for an explanation. [Pg.148]

Without good government, establishment of policies directed at promoting food production (rather than just commodity production), appropriate intellectual property policies that assure agricultural technology is publicly available, and fair international trade policies, a discovery that may help farmers and consumers around the world is useless. GE may help Burkina Faso, but only within the framework of a viable public sector that promotes the public good. [Pg.150]

Beneficial effects of compost addition to soil include increased pH and cation exchange capacity (CEC), higher N and P availability and improved soil structure. Applications of 5-10 t ha 1 of compost prepared from household refuses, farmyard manure, crop residues and ashes increased pH and CEC in the topsoil and boosted sorghum yields by factors of 1.5 to 3 in Burkina Faso (Ouedraogo et al.,... [Pg.66]

The availability of P from RP mainly depends on the reactivity of the material and on soil pH. Combined applications of RP and organic materials may foster P solubility (Sanchez et al., 1997). Organic farming principles permit the use of RP only in non-acidulated form, which implies that highly reactive RP should be used. High- to medium-reactive RP deposits exist in Angola, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger,... [Pg.67]
