Brucella species

Brucella species including B. abortus B. melitensis B. suis (Agent US)... [Pg.500]

CDC Case Definition An illness characterized by acute or insidious onset of fever, night sweats, undue fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, headache, and arthralgia. Laboratory criteria for diagnosis is (1) isolation of Brucella species from a clinical specimen or (2) fourfold or greater rise in Brucella agglutination titer between acute- and convalescent-phase serum specimens obtained >2 weeks apart and studied at the same laboratory or (3) demonstration by immunofluorescence of Brucella species in a clinical specimen. [Pg.500]

B. cants is the species of Brucella species that can infect dogs, This species has occasionally been transmitted to humans, but the vast majority of dog infections do not result in human illness. Although veterinarians exposed to blood of infected animals are at risk, pet owners are not considered to be at risk for infection. This is partly because it is uniikely that they will come in contact with blood, semen, or placenta of the dog. The bacteria may be cleared from the animal within a few days of treatment however re infection is common and some animal body fluids may be infectious for weeks. Immunocompromised persons (cancer patients, HIV-infected individuals, or transplantation patients) should not handle dogs known to be infected with B. cams. [Pg.388]

The O-antigens of Brucella species are homopolymers of a-l,2-linked 4,6-dideoxy-4-formamido-D-mannopyranose residues in which there may bea-1,3 linkages [102,103], The Yersinia 0 9 antigen is a similar 1,2-linked homopolymer but contains no 1,3 linkages. A related structure Y-acylated by 3-deoxy-L-glycero-tetronic acid in place of the formate group is produced by Vibrio cholerae Inaba and Ogawa strains [104], These structures have been the subject of synthetic work [105-107],... [Pg.8]

For detection of especially dangerous bacterial and viral agents such as Bacillus anthracis, Francisella tularensis, Yersinia pestis, Brucella species and influenza A/H5, real-time PCR using a LightCycler 2.0 (Roche) and reagents (Idaho Technologies) has been applied at NCDC. [Pg.32]

B. abortus 2308-QAE displayed colonization results typical of vimlent Brucella species in that the parotid lymph node was colonized by 7 days postinoculation. However, B. abortus 2308-QAE infection resulted in a greater number of cfu/g than did its parental B. abortus 2308 strain in animals given the same dosage of infectious organisms -lxlO9 cfu (Table 1). This also held tme for the RB51-QAE strain compared withRB51. [Pg.105]

Serologically, all animals infected with B. abortus 2308-QAE tested positive for the presence of Brucella antibodies in their sera on the brucellosis card test and by Western immunoblot analysis, which used cell lysates from B. abortus 2308, B. abortus 2308-QAE, and B. melitensis 16M. Western blot analysis results were indicative of what is seen typically when the sera from animals exposed to smooth Brucella species are analyzed. RB51 animals all remained negative on the brucellosis card test. [Pg.105]

Brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria of the genus Brucella. These bacteria are primarily passed among animals, and they cause disease in many different vertebrates. Various Brucella species affect sheep, goats, cattle, deer, elk, pigs, dogs, and several other animals. Humans become infected by coming in contact with animals or animal products that are contaminated with these bacteria. In humans brucellosis can cause a range of symptoms that are similar to the flu and may include fever, sweats, headaches, back pains, and physical weakness. [Pg.85]
