Early stage breast cancer

If cancerous lesions are not growing rapidly, they do not metabolize glucose avidly, and are often not visible by PET/FDG imaging. These include prostate cancer, bronchio-alveolar lung cancer, early stages of breast cancer, and renal cancer. They do accumulate C-11 acetate, which reflects oxidative phosphorylation (Krebs cycle)), and C-11 or F-18 labeled choline, a constituent of biological membranes. [Pg.77]

Assess patients for signs and symptoms related to breast cancer in early and late stages of the disease. [Pg.1303]

Determine the treatment goals for early-stage, locally advanced, and metastatic breast cancer. [Pg.1303]

Discuss the role of trastuzumab in the management of early- and advanced-stage breast cancer. [Pg.1303]

Breast cancer is diagnosed most commonly in early stages, when it is a highly curable malignancy. [Pg.1303]

Local therapy of early-stage breast cancer consists of modified radical mastectomy or lumpectomy plus external-beam radiation therapy. The surgical approach to the ipsilateral axilla may consist of a full level I/II axillary lymph node dissection or a lymph node mapping procedure with sentinel lymph node biopsy. [Pg.1303]

Adjuvant endocrine therapy reduces the rates of relapse and death in patients with hormone-receptor-positive early breast cancer tumors. Adjuvant chemotherapy reduces the rates of relapse and death in all patients with early-stage breast cancer. [Pg.1303]

The use of preoperative systemic therapy is gaining favor in both early-stage and locally advanced breast cancers. This approach to therapy, referred to as neoadjuvant or primary systemic therapy, most often consists of chemotherapy but in special circumstances also may include hormonal therapy (e.g., in inoperable patients with significant comorbidities). The advantages of preoperative systemic therapy include... [Pg.1310]

Breast cancer is a malignancy originating from breast tissue. This chapter distinguishes between early stages, which are potentially curable, and metastatic breast cancer (MBC), which is usually incurable. [Pg.692]

Trastuzumab in combination with adjuvant chemotherapy is indicated in patients with early stage, HER2-positive breast cancer. The risk of recurrence was reduced up to 50% in clinical trials. [Pg.695]

The SERMs that belong to the benzopyrans group form a large group of drugs (Fig. 2.5), several of which are at early stages of clinical development for the treatment of hormone-dependent breast cancer and endometrial cancer. [Pg.74]

Creamer et al. (1994) reported cases of breast cancer where the use of tamoxifen was temporally related to the development of an inflammatory polyarthritis resembling rheumatoid arthritis. Cases of cyclical psoriatic arthritis, however, have positively responded to antiestrogen therapy (Stevens et al. 1993). Tsai and Liu (1992) have shown that tamoxifen concurrently injected with estradiol benzoate antagonizes the condrodestructive effects of estradiol at the early stage of knee osteoarthritis in rabbits. [Pg.336]

Currently, anastrozole and letrozole are efficacious in early-stage, locally advanced, and mefasfafic disease and fhus they present with the most complete data set for the different stages of breast cancer. Although it seems rather unlikely that one will be able to detect differences with respect to clinical effects at the tumour level, the indirect comparison of different AIs suggests a stronger evidence for the use of exemestane compared with other AIs for breast cancer therapy [90]. [Pg.40]

Aromatase inhibitors increase bone turnover by near complete estrogen depletion, leading to reduced bone mineral density and an increased risk of fractures. Bisphosphonates plus calcium and vitamin D supplementation mitigate this (26). In an open, multicenter, randomized study in 602 women with early-stage breast cancer taking letrozole 2.5 mg/day, zoledronic acid 4 mg every 6 months prevented bone loss (27). [Pg.160]
