The impact of P-glycoprotein on the HIV therapy was well demonstrated by a study that investigated the brain entry of H IV-protease inhibitors using mdrl knockout mice [138,139]. These data indicate that P-glycoprotein expressed in the blood-brain barrier limits the access of H IV-protease inhibitors to the brain, thereby possibly contributing to the persistence of vims in this sanctuary site.
