Informed opinion is a nonmathematical technique which is often called blue-sky estimating. The two terms are not necessarily synonymous. Informed opinion may be the consensus of people inside the company, along with or without outside opinions. Such a consensus can be broadened into the Delphi technique, which uses a sequential series of questioimaires submitted to a panel of experts who have Httie or no contact with each other. Blue-sky answers are akin to the informed opinion except that they usually consist of subjective speculation by experts in a confined one-day meeting in which each participant knows the views of the others. 

The efficiency for a boiler or heater is improved by lowering its stack temperature. The stack minimum temperature is frequently limited by SO3 gas dew point. References 6, 7, and 8 discuss this important subject. A stack as hot as 400°F (or perhaps higher) can have problems if the SO3 concentration is high enough. Reference 9 states that SO, condensation will produce a blue-gray haze when viewed against a clear blue sky.

Black-and-white camera film, in the old days of film photography, was very sensitive to blue light but not to red light. We do continually examine our portfolio of activities and determine what relates to the business from the advanced development, applied research perspective and from the very long-term research perspective. We need to have a mix of both, and we have a broad continuum of activity. In reality the spectrum of fundamental research to productization requires different modes of working at different stages—there is an evolution from what could perhaps be more individual blue-sky research to a team-based, problem-solving approach. To be successful, we need flexibility.

Do we see a blue sky because of color fatigue If so, we would see the blue sky only after staring at an orange object. This does not happen.
