In the studies discussed, wheat bran, cellulose, and psyllium fiber feeding resulted in increased fecal fat losses and in lowered blood serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels (14,15,32,41) as well as increased fecal losses of calcium. Possible involvement of dietary fat with high or low dietary fiber intake has not been extensively investigated. However, that calcium is involved in intestinal fat absorption is generally accepted (42-45). [Pg.179]

Water soluble, high viscosity grade cellulose ether compositions are useful for the reduction of serum lipid levels, particularly total serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides and low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels, and/or attenuate the rise of blood glucose levels. The compositions may be in the form of a prehydrated ingestible composition, e.g. a gelatin, or a comestible, e.g. a biscuit. [Pg.316]

Standard lipid screening to obtain a cholesterol profile for the risk of cardiovascular disease routinely reports total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Cholesterol values are reported in milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL). Different organizations have made recommendations for normal cholesterol levels, but these must be interpreted carefully, as they are contingent on other risk conditions. For example, the recommendations for smokers or those with a family history of heart disease will be lower for someone without these conditions. The National Center for Cholesterol Education (NCEP) endorsed by the American Heart Association believes that LDL is the primary cholesterol component to determine therapy. LDL cholesterol accounts for 60—70% of blood serum cholesterol. An LDL less than 160 mg/dL is recommended for individuals with no more than one risk factor and less than 100 mg/dL for individuals with coronary heart disease. NCEP classifies HDL, which comprises between 20% and 30% of blood cholesterol, below 40 mg/dL as low. Triglycerides are an indirect measure of VLDL cholesterol. The NCEP considers a normal triglyceride level as less than 150 mg/dL. [Pg.83]

Concerning the pharmacological activities of saffron components, the inhibitory effect for the increase of bilirubin in blood [2], and the deterioration activities or cholesterol and triglyceride levels in serum by crocin and crocetin have been reported [3]. Anti-tumor activity of saffron on mice transplanted with sarcoma-180,... [Pg.957]

The characteristics of CR monkeys are summarized in Table 2 [72] and Fig. 12A-C [73]. CR monkeys weigh less [74] and have less total and abdominal obesity than controls [75], In addition, CR reduces body temperature and induces a transient reduction in metabolic rate [76], Young male CR monkeys also exhibit delayed sexual and skeletal maturation [72, 74]. In addition, several lines of evidence suggest that CR improves the disease risk in rhesus monkeys [72], CR monkeys have reduced blood glucose and insulin levels and improved insulin sensitivity [75], CR also reduces blood pressure and lowers the serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels [77]. In... [Pg.226]

The number of participants with high serum levels of DDT was small, and therefore no sound conclusions could be drawn from the study, regardless of the time involved. On the other hand, the population was large enough for the study to increase understanding on several points—namely, that DDT appears to accumulate with age, that the liver is affected, and that serum triglycerides and cholesterol levels are related to DDT level. Further, in the citizens of Triana, levels of PCB s in serum were found to correlate positively with blood pressure, certain liver function tests, and cholesterol, independently of age and sex. [Pg.29]

The purpose of the second study was to determine the effect of changes in kind and amount of dietary fat, with or without manganese supplementation, on blood serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels and on manganese status of human adults. The project was comprised of a 5-day pre-period and four, 14-day experimental periods. [Pg.130]

In normal-weight healthy volunteers a single dose of acarbose (100 mg) added to a standard breakfast induced a marked lowering of the postprandial rise in blood glucose, serum insulin and triglyceride levels (Hillebrand et al., 1979). Similar results were seen when acarbose was added to lunch or dinner. [Pg.164]

The H NMR spectra of the synovial fluid of a female patient with seronegative erosive rheumatoid arthritis and of another female patient with sarcoidosis and independent inflammatory osteoarthritis were followed over the course of several months and standard clinical tests were performed on paired blood serum samples taken at the same time. It was found that the synovial fluid levels of triglyceride CH3, CHj and CH, glycoprotein N-acetyl signals and creatinine all correlated well with one another, and with standard clinical measures of inflammation. The correlation of disease state with creatinine level is of particular interest, and the altered triglyceride composition and concentration in osteoarthritis were suggested as potential markers for the disease in synovial fluid. ... [Pg.71]
