Bosin.—Several methods have been suggested for bleaching rosin in some instances the constitution of the rosin is altered, and in others the cost is too great or the process impracticable. [Pg.43]

These rosin-based sizes, whether paste, Hquid, or emulsions, can be used to size all grades of paper that are produced at acid pH. The latter include bleached or unbleached kraft Hnerboard and bag paper, bleached printing and writing grades, and cylinder board. In addition, polyaluminum compounds have been used in place of alum, most notably, polyaluminum chloride (48), which can reduce barium deposits where these have been a problem. The barium chloride by-product is more water-soluble than barium sulfate. Other polyaluminum compounds such as polyhydroxylated forms of alum and polyaluminum siHcosulfate have been evaluated as alum replacements. [Pg.18]

Materials. All paper samples were cut from a continuous length of machine-made rolls. Two different papers have been studied. One is a bleached Kraft wood pulp waterleaf (50-lb basis weight) made by Neenah Paper Mills from a stock that comprised northern softwoods (60Z) and Lake States hard woods (40J), and contained no additives. The second paper, Foldur Kraft, is a bleached Kraft paper (70-lb basis weight) made by Champion Paper Company from a stock of 90Z softwoods and 10Z hardwoods, with alum-rosin size and 8Z titanium dioxide filler. This paper was obtained 15 years ago. Since then it has been stored indoors in areas which have not enjoyed a carefully regulated environmental control. [Pg.65]

Sample Preparation. Two papers were selected. One was Champion Foldur Kraft, a bleached southern kraft paper, containing rosin size and fillers, from a single roll of known composition. The other paper was newsprint that had already been cut into sheets when received by the laboratory. The newsprint was analyzed as follows 80% groundwood and 20% unbleached sulfite. [Pg.67]

Materials. All test papers were obtained from a single roll or were made from pulp. The following test papers were used (1) Foldur kraft paper, a bleached kraft paper made from 90% southern pine and 10% hardwood pulps, with 0.5% rosin size and 3% titanium filler (2) newsprint paper made from 80% groundwood and 20% unbleached sulfite pulp and (3) handsheets prepared from a 1 1 furnish of Weyerhaeuser New Bern softwood (NBS) and New Bern hardwood (NBH) bleached kraft pulps. [Pg.418]

Aniline-furfural resin n. Furfural yields resinous compounds not only with aniline but with aromatic amines generally. Rosin modified resins have also been produced. Amine-fiirfural resins are dark in color. Bleaching occurs on exposed to light. They possess the unique property of compatibility with cellulose acetate. [Pg.56]

The materials employed in making mottled soap comprise bleached palm oil, tallow, bone fat, cocoa-nut oil, palm-kernel oil, cotton-seed oil, and, in some instances, rosin. [Pg.53]

Another operation in which soap is used, is that of milling or fulling, whereby the fabric is made to shrink and thus becomes more compact and closer in texture. The fabric is thoroughly cleansed, for which purpose the soap should be neutral and free from rosin and silicates, otherwise a harsh feeling or stickiness will be produced. Curd soaps or finely-fitted soaps made from tallow or bleached palm oil, with or without the addition of cocoa-nut oil, give the best results. All traces of soap must be carefully removed if the fabric is to be dyed. [Pg.92]
