Despite the promising performance of newly studied enzymes in the laboratory, their application in the industrial milieu might fail due to their lack of robustness. However, as anaerobic, extremophilic, and marine bacteria might be a source of enzymes with superior chances of success in biotechnological processes, a great deal of laboratory effort has been concentrated on their production and characterization. Furthermore, the design of novel enzymes as well as molecular approaches such as enzyme evolution and metagenomic approaches can be used to identify and develop novel biocatalysts from uncultured bacteria—a treasure of unknown proteins. [Pg.214]

The types of molecules synthesized by biotechnological techniques are restricted to those biomolecules whose stmctures can be encoded in the DNA of organisms capable of translating them into functional nanomaterials. Other types of molecules and nanomaterials can be synthesized by chemical synthetic approaches, such as covalent syntheses and molecular self-assembly of molecular units. [Pg.206]

Several approaches are being explored and developed using new methods in biotechnology to eliminate pre-harvest aflatoxin contamination of food and feed. These approaches resulted from recent information acquired on 1) non-aflatoxigenic A. flavus strains that prevent aflatoxin contamination of cottonseed when co-inoculated with aflatoxigenic strains, 2) molecular mechanisms governing aflatoxin biosynthesis, and 3) plant-derived metabolites that inhibit aflatoxin biosynthesis. [Pg.287]
