Bioprocesses and biotechnology

Chemical science is the most fundamental driver of advances within the chemical industry. Maintaining and improving the competitiveness of the U.S. chemical industry requires advances in three areas of chemical science chemical synthesis, bioprocesses and biotechnology, and materials technology. 

Bioprocesses and Biotechnology Humans have used biologically based processes (bioprocesses) since they first made cheese, leavened bread, and brewed spirits. Bioprocesses are increasingly used to produce chemical products, and there is a whole world of potential biocatalysts to be discovered.

Academia should broaden the knowledge base relevant to industrial bioprocesses and use results of biotechnology research in health and agriculture to seek discoveries in bioprocessing. 

From the very beginning, it was decided that the presented papers would be compiled and published in appropriate international journals. This was to include both oral and poster presentations. The first several symposia were published in Biotechnology and Bioengineering (1-8), and later proceedings have been published in Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology (9-24). These peer-reviewed proceedings have become an important resource for innovative bioprocessing research.

Chemical and biotechnological processes were developed in parallel, but the bioprocess was simpler and resulted in a higher quality product. 

When used in biotechnology, the first part of a FIA system (see Figure 22-4) is a filtration probe [28-32]. A cell-free sample is drawn from the bioprocess unit (eg, a fermenter) via this probe. Thus, these probes are sterile barriers between the bioprocess and the analysis system, protecting the bioprocess from infections and the analysis system from clogging by cells. Only a few FIA applications utilizing cell-containing samples are known [33]. In those cases, cells and medium are separated inside the FIA system.
