Effects of Sesquiterpene Lactones on Seed Germination. Sesquiterpene lactones are common constituents of the Asteraceae but are also found in other angiosperm families and in certain liverworts (31,32). These highly bitter substances exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities (J 3) which include cytotoxicity, anti-tumor, anti-microbial, insecticidal (34) and molluscicidal (35) properties. Furthermore, they are known causes for livestock poisoning and contact dermatitis in humans (33). Structure-activity relationship studies on sesquiterpene lactones have demonstrated that biological activity frequently depend on the presence of the cr... [Pg.142]

Ras is strictly localized to the inner side of the plasma membrane. A lipid anchor covalently attached to the C-terminus of Ras penetrates into the lipid bilayer. This membrane anchorage is essential for the biological activity of Ras. Hence, the inhibition of anchor attachment has become an attractive pharmacological target [ 13]. See Waldmann H, Thutewohl M,Ras-Farnesyltransferase-inhibitors as promising anti-tumor drugs, this volume. [Pg.65]

Farnesylamine (123) (Fig. 20), a sesquiterpene alkaloid, was recently detected in whole extracts of Monomorium fieldi [129]. This compound had already be prepared by synthesis and found to display a whole range of biological activities. Among others, it inhibits arthropod molting, squalene synthesis, and the growth of malignant tumor cells, modulates human T cells and has anti-osteo-porosis activity [129]. [Pg.233]

So far, not much literature on the biological activity of iminophosphor-anes has appeared. Compounds possessing triorganylphosphoranylidenea-mino structural elements such as mitomycin (41) have proved to be interesting anti-tumor reagents the cancerostatic activity seems to be localized in the aziridine units of 40 (Scheme 19) [87PS(30)845]. [Pg.173]

Anti-thyroid activity. Boiled rice taken orally by adults at a dose of 350 g/person was inactive on iodine uptake by the thyroid Anti-tumor activity. Bran, administered intraperitoneally to mice at a dose of 100 mg/kg, was active on Sarcoma 180 (solid). The biological activity has been patented . Fermented grains, in the ration of rats, were active. Miso, a paste made from the seeds of Oryza sativa and G lycine max (soybean), was fed ad libitum. The incidence of cancers in the miso treated rats was 20% less than controls vs 7,12-dimethylbenz-[a]anthracene -induced carcinogenesis ". Water extract of dried seed hull, administered intraperitoneally to mice, was active on Sarcoma 180 (ASC). A glycoprotein fraction has been tested. The biological activity reported has been patented . Anti-ulcer activity. A cerebroside fraction of rice bran, administered intraperitoneally to mice at a dose of 100 mg/kg, was inac-... [Pg.407]

These novel tetrameric bromotyrosine metabolites display a range of biological activities, including effects on calcium channels (1900), lipoxygenase inhibition (1772), tumor angiogenesis inhibition (1901), and endothelial cell anti-proliferation (1902). Syntheses of several bastadins have been accomplished (1903,1904). [Pg.314]

IV. In vivo biological activity specificity and efficiency Animal Using animal disease models, demonstrate specific antisense effect by various bioassays such as anti-viral and anti-tumor effect, induction of apoptosis, improving survival... [Pg.37]

Several terpenoids, particularly those with a lactone moiety, have been examined for plant growth-regulating activity. Incidentally, several of these compounds exhibit anti-tumor and insecticidal activity. They are classified into mono-(CjQ), sesqui-(Ci5), di-(C2Q), tri-(Cgg) and tetraterpenes (C40) Some representative candidates among these classes possessing biological activity are as follows ... [Pg.151]
