Oriented polypropylene film (OPP) may be classified as heat-set and non-heat-set, blown and tentered, coextmded and coated. Orientation improves the cold-temperature resistance and other physical properties. Heat-set biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) is the most widely used protective packagiag film ia the United States. It is used to wrap bakery products, as lamination pHes for potato and com chips, and for pastas and numerous other flexible pouch and wrapping appHcations. Nonheat-set OPP is used as a sparkling, transparent shrink-film overwrap for cartons of candy.

Patel et al. [70] in a recent publication have explored the adhesive action of the mbber-siUca hybrid nanocomposites on different substrates. The rubber-silica hybrid nanocomposites are synthesized through in situ silica formation from TEOS in strong acidic pH within acryhc copolymer (EA-BA) and terpolymer (EA-BA-AA) matrices. The transparent nanocomposites have been apphed in between the aluminum (Al), wood (W), and biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) sheets separately and have been tested for peel strength, lap shear strength, and static holding power of the adhesive joints. 

Stretching a polymer in two perpendicular directions, either successively or by blowing a bubble of molten material, leads to its biaxial orientation, which strongly improves mechanical properties in the stretching directions and/or gas permeability (e.g., biaxial orientation of polypropylene leads to BOPP (for biaxially oriented polypropylene) or biaxial orientation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) gives CC>2-impermeable bottles for carbonated beverages.) Biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films have higher stiffness than cast films and consequently can be used in much thinner gauges. Homopolvmers are used almost exclusively to provide maximum stiffness and water-vapor barrier. Oriented films are produced by the tenter frame and bubble processes.

The Treofan Group is a manufacturer of biaxial oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) and cast polypropylene film under the brand name Treofan. The company also manufactures PLA film under the brand name Biophan. 

Materials. Biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films of 50 um thickness were obtained from 3M and have been described (2). PMDA-ODA (PI) was Kapton H polyimide from Dupont. Copper-plated PTFE films were obtained from Spire Corporation (Bedford, MA). They were prepared using the Ion Beam Enhanced Deposition (IBED) process in which a 100 nm thick Cu film was vapor-deposited onto a PTFE substrate in the presence of a beam of 400 eV Ar+ ions of 25 uA/cm2 (IQ). Shortly before SIMS analysis, the Cu film was removed slowly by peeling at 90° in ambient conditions. Metal-coated PI films were prepared by sputtering 50 nm Cr and 1 um Cu onto a 50 um thick Kapton film on both sides. Thermal annealing was performed in a vacuum chamber at 2xl0 6 torr using a quartz lamp as the heating source. The samples were held for 15 min at the desired temperature and then cooled down to ambient temperature inside the chamber for about 2 hours. Just prior to SIMS analysis, the metal films were peeled slowly at 90° and then immediately introduced into the vacuum chamber of the instrument.

Polystyrene films and polyester (polyethylene terephthalate) films are only used in the biaxially stretched form, because unstretched films are very weak and brittle. To a lesser extent this is also true for polypropylene films. Roll-quenched flat film is used for many packaging applications, but below 0°C these films become brittle. Biaxially oriented polypropylene film, on the other hand, is not brittle at a temperature as low as — 50°C and is suitable for packaging frozen foods. 

The most universal method at present of improving heat sealability is coating with low-melting polymers which show good heat sealability at a temperature where the biaxial orientation is preserved and shrinkage is still absent or low. Plastic banknotes were introduced by Australia following research and development by CSIRO and are now wide spread. The material is biaxially oriented polypropylene and is not really a new polymer. Articles about this technology are occasionally recycled by newspapers and there are many relevant and easily found web sites. 

The objective of this chapter is to study the absorption and reflection of infrared light by the uncoated and A1 coated surfaces of polymier films using transmission and reflection techniques. For this purpose two commercial biaxially oriented polypropylene film, a cast polypropylene film, a milk cover and a chocolate coating material with their one surface coated with a thin aluminum layer were examined by irrfrared spectroscopy. One surface of the each film was coated with a thin aluminum layer.

The PP film used in this study was 30 pm thick, biaxially oriented polypropylene. The film was previously untreated, with no surface contamination observed by XPS. The PET films studied were both biaxially oriented, with one 50 pm thick, known commercially as Melinex S (DuPont Films), and the other of thickness 23 pm (Goodfellow). Again, no surface contamination was observed prior to treatment.
