Beta transmission sensors are used extensively for on-line thickness or weight measurement of continuous web processes. The sensors can also be mounted on a scanning platform for high-speed bidirectional scanning. A commercially available beta transmission sensor is shown in Figure 18-9. [Pg.475]

Nuclear. Mass can be determined directly by measuring changes in the absorption, reflection, or transmission of alpha- or beta-rays, which changes in proportion to the amount of material present. This method is primarily used to determine the mass of bulk material moving on a conveyor. The advantages include the following ... [Pg.328]

Cholinergic transmission, but nerve cell chain originates in the thoracolumbar part of the spinal cord and is therefore sympathetic, alpha, a beta, 3. [Pg.201]

Elastomeric composition for dynamic application of cross-linked E-plastomers has been made with filer-reinforced systems which contain a metal salt (typically zinc) of an alpha, beta unsaturated acid. These additives improve the tensile and tear strength of the elastomer and are cured with a peroxide cure system. These cross-linked articles are suitable for dynamic loading applications such as belting, including power transmission and flat belting. [Pg.172]

Microporous nanoparticles with ordered zeolitic structure such as Ti-Beta are used for incorporation into walls or deposition into pores of mesoporous materials to form the micro/mesoporous composite materials [1-3], Microporous particles need to be small enough to be successfully incorporated in the composite structure. This means that the zeolite synthesis has to be stopped as soon as the particles exhibit ordered zeolitic structure. To study the growth of Ti-Beta particles we used 29Si solid-state and liquid-state NMR spectroscopy combined with x-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). With these techniques we monitored zeolite formation from the initial precursor gel to the final Ti-Beta product. [Pg.65]

The size of Ti-Beta particles was determined with the high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). After 28 hours of hydrothermal treatment they grew to... [Pg.67]

Beta Blockers. The beta blockers, which act by interfering with noradrenergic transmission, have been used to manage aggression and other behavioral disturbances in patients who have suffered brain injury due to trauma and stroke for over 25 years. Several beta blockers have been tested including propranolol (Inderal), pindolol (Visken), nadolol (Corgard), and metoprolol (Lopressor). Fat-soluble beta blockers such as propranolol and pindolol more readily cross the blood-brain barrier and are thus better suited to managing psychiatric symptoms such as behavioral lability. [Pg.351]

Local treatment of skin and soft tissue infections with antibiotic-containing ointments or solutions should not be used because it leads to allergic reactions and rapid development of bacterial resistance. In settings where MRSA or resistant Enterobacte-riaceae (like ESBL s gram negative bacteria with extended spectrum beta lactames) or Pseudomonas spp. occur, the empiric use of vancomycin and a carbapenem can be necessary. The risk of transmission of these organisms should be minimalised by hygienic and isolation measures. [Pg.529]

It is beta-4 (chlorophenyl)-gamma aminobutyric acid. It is a powerful neuronal depressant. It reduces the release of excitatory transmitter and is antinociceptive in animal studies. It inhibits monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflex transmission at spinal level, probably by stimulating the GABAg... [Pg.113]

Several classes of (3-lactamases, often encoded in transmissible plasmids, have spread worldwide rapidly among bacteria, seriously decreasing the effectivenss of penicillins and other (3-lactam anti-biotics.t y Most (3-lactamases (classes A and C) contain an active site serine and are thought to have evolved from the dd transpeptidases, but the B typey has a catalytic Zn2+. The latter, as well as a recently discovered type A enzyme,2 hydrolyze imipenem, currently one of the antibiotics of last resort used to treat infections by penicillin-resistant bacteria. Some (3-lactam antibiotics are also powerful inhibitors of (3-lactamases.U/aa/bb These antibiotics may also have uses in inhibition of serine proteasesCC/dd such as elastase. Some antibiotic-resistant staphylococci produce an extra penicillin-binding protein that protects them from beta lactams.ee Because of antibiotic resistance the isolation of antibiotics from mixed populations of microbes from soil, swamps, and lakes continues. Renewed efforts are being... [Pg.1165]

Adrenergic transmission is well known to be involved in the regulation of homeostatic control through its functions in the autonomic nervous system. Additionally, adrenergic projections in the brain have been identified with important roles in neurocognition. Adrenoreceptors are seven transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors that mediate the physiological responses of epinephrine and norepinephrine. The first classification of these receptors resolved a (alpha)-adrenoreceptors (aARs) from P (beta)-adrenoreceptors (PARs) (Ahlquist, 1948). Since then, additional subtypes and variants have been described. [Pg.470]
