The ash deposits resulting from the combustion of solid and oil fuels often contain appreciable quantities of other corrodants in addition to vanadium pentoxide. One of the more important of these is sodium sulphate, and the effects of this constituent in producing sulphur attack have been mentioned. The contents of sodium sulphate and vanadium pentoxide present in fuel oil ash can vary markedly and the relative merits of different materials depend to a great extent upon the proportions of these constituents. Propagated outbreaks of infection relate to the direct transmission of an infective agent from a diseased individual to a healthy, susceptible one. Mechanisms of such transmission were described in Chapter 7 and include inhalation of infective aerosols (measles, mumps, diphtheria), direct physical contact (syphilis, herpes virus) and, where sanitation standards are poor, through the introduction of infected faecal material into drinking water (cholera, typhoid) or onto food (Salmonella, Campylobacter). The ease of transmission, and hence the rate of onset of an epidemic (Fig. 9.3) relates not only to the susceptibility status and general state of health of the individuals concerned but also to the virulence properties of the organism, the route of transmission, the duration of the infective period associated with the disease, behavioural patterns, age of the population group and the population density (i.e. urban versus rural). [Pg.140]

A further problem with most test regimes is the limited number of behavioural responses which can normally be measured and compared with the wide behavioural repertoire exhibited in the natural environment. It is important to note that physical properties depend on various other factors controlling the behavioural pattern of the material. Clay sedimentation properties depend on porosity, water content and minerals content of different specific gravity. Electrical conductivity depends on porosity, saturation, pore fluid conductivity, water content, and clay content. Velocity is very sensitive to saturation (air-water) but hardly at all to fluid composition. On the other hand, conductivity is very sensitive to both saturation and pore fluid conductivity. The importance of dispersion and its influence on flow pattern and conversion in homogeneous reactors has already been studied in Chapter 2. The role of dispersion, both axial and radial, in packed bed reactors will now be considered. A general account of the nature of dispersion in packed beds, together with details of experimental results and their correlation, has already been given in Volume 2, Chapter 4. Those features which have a significant effect on the behaviour of packed bed reactors will now be summarised. The equation for the material balance in a reactor will then be obtained for the case where plug flow conditions are modified by the effects of axial dispersion.
