As the acetal group in 2,5-O-methylene-D-mannitol is relatively resistant to hydrolysis, S. B. Baker" studied the stabilities of 1,4 3,6-dianhydro-2,5-0-methylene-D-mannitol and -D-iditol relative to that of the D-mannitol acetal. He synthesized l,4 3,6-dianhydro-2,5-0-methylene-D-mannitol by cyclizing 2,5-0-methylene-l,6-di-0-p-tolyl-sulfonyl-D-mannitol or by methylenation of l,4 3,6-dianhydro-D-man-nitol. Gough and Baker studied a number of conventional and modified stationary phases in order to find the best one for quantitative gas chromatography of heroin and structurally related compounds. Silanized 0V-210 was found to be the most suitable for the separation of heroin, codeine, acetylcodeine, morphine and 6-0-monoacetylmorphine. It gave the best reproducibility of retention times and less losses of the compounds by adsorption. For quantitative analysis 2.8 m by 4 mm I.D. glass columns and Diatomite CLQ, 80-100 mesh, as solid support were used at a column temperature of 225°C. Despite the fact that some of the compounds, particularly morphine, suffered adsorption losses during gas chromatography, these losses were reproducible, and satisfactory quantitative data could be obtained, as shown in Table 14.19. [Pg.134]

This subject has received little attention in the context of pressure vessel bursts. Pittman (1976) studied it using a two-dimensional numerical code. However, his results are inconclusive, because the number of cases he studied was small and because the grid he used was coarse. Baker et al. The synthesis and study of dendrimers is a relatively new branch of macro-molecular chemistry. It began in 1985 with the publication of two landmark papers (D.A. Tomalia, H. Baker, J. Dewald, J.M. The word dendrimer comes from the Greek word dendra, meaning tree, and was applied to these compounds by Tomalia et al. in their very first paper. Newkome s team, by contrast, called their molecules arborols from the Latin word arbor, which also means a tree. The term cascade molecule has also been used, but the word dendrimer is the one that is used most widely throughout the literature, and is also used in the present chapter. [Pg.130]

Very little information exists in the literature on the transformation and degradation of methyl parathion in air. An early study indicated that direct photolysis of methyl parathion may occur however, the products of this photolysis were not determined (Baker and Applegate 1974). A later study found a transformation product of methyl parathion, methyl paraoxon, in air samples taken from areas where methyl parathion had been applied. Formation of methyl paraoxon was attributed to the vapor phase oxidation of methyl parathion (Seiber et al. 1989).
