Award competition

Usually, a small awards committee, comprised of academic and industrial members, is appointed to make the judgment. It begins by reading the reports of those design teams whose oral presentations were judged to be among the best. [Pg.778]

At many universities, the design award is presented to the design team at the commencement exercises, either for the Chemical Engineering Department, the Engineering School, or the entire university. It often involves a small stipend and a certificate or plaque. [Pg.778]

Finally, it is important to mention the annual National Student Design Competition prepared by AIChE members from industry for the AIChE Student Chapters. The design contest is timed to be completed by the end of the spring semester, after which the awardees are se- [Pg.778]

In this chapter, readers have been presented with a template and associated milestones that must be completed, for guidance in the preparation of the written design report. No exercises are included because the template is intended to be used by design teams when writing their written reports. [Pg.779]

Furthermore, readers have learned how to organize an oral design presentation. In this connection, they have become familiar with the alternative media for the presentation, with the reasons for rehearsing the presentation and the methods used to evaluate presentations. [Pg.779]

This solution breaks down where the market is too small to support more than one or two entrants. In this case, sponsors should award competitively bid contracts to whichever manufacturer offers to sell drugs at the lowest price. [Pg.282]

He has over 200 publications which include books, book chapters, encyclopedia chapters, patents, reviews, papers, and symposia presentations. He is also an inventor of several US and international patents (issued/published). Dr. Sabnis is the recipient of Pfish Award, Perkin Iimovation Award, Grand Iimovation Award, Competitive Spirit Award and Best Doctoral Thesis Award. Dr. Sabnis is awarded the Gold Medal for Outstanding service to the coloration industry by the Society of Dyers and Colourists, Bradford, U.K. [Pg.466]

To protect both parties in a contract arrangement it is good practice to make a contract in which the scope of work, completion time and method of reimbursement are agreed. Contracts are normally awarded though a competitive tendering process or after negotiation if there is only one suitable contractor. [Pg.301]

Many companies operate incentive schemes, ranging from competitions among departments or factories for an award (e.g., a certificate or trophy) to... [Pg.49]

Problems can also arise when the results of safety audits are used in a competitive manner, for example, to compare two plants. Such use is obviously closely linked to the operation of incentive schemes. However, as was pointed out earlier, there is no evidence that giving an award to the "best plant" produces any lasting improvement in safety. The problem here is that the competitive aspect may be a diversion from the aim of safety audits, which... [Pg.53]

The Instrumentation and Laboratory Improvement (ILI) Program aids in the purchase of laboratory equipment for use in undergraduate laboratories at all levels. Annual funding has been 23 million for the past 5 years and is anticipated to remain at this level for the near future. Typically, 2300 proposals are received, resulting in approximately 600 awards per year. ILI has two components The major one accepts proposals for equipment only, the other, known as Leadership in Laboratory Development, seeks to support the development of exemplary national models for laboratory curricula by providing funds for personnel and supplies as well as for equipment. Five percent of the ILI budget is devoted to Leadership projects, and preliminary proposals are required. A 50% institutional match for equipment costs is necessary for all ILI proposals. The maximum allowable request from NSF is 100,000. In the 1992 competition, 60 proposals to initiate or improve materials science laboratories were received 15 were from departments of chemistry, the remainder from engineering units. [Pg.70]

In Sperry-Rand Corp (12) vs. Electronics Concepts, Inc., et al. the ex-employees had taken valuable data on radar antennas. One had learned what he knew at Sperry-Rand and went into competition with Sperry-Rand—even competing on a government bid with stolen knowledge of the exact amount of the Sperry-Rand bid. Both damages and an injunction were awarded to Sperry. These ex-employees willfully and deliberately and with full knowledge of the unlawfulness of their acts took both technical and financial data. [Pg.48]

Computer equipment and a substantial travel award offered as a prize in a promotional competition are examples of prizes which have been found unacceptable on grounds of cost. [Pg.763]

Because the scope of work for JACADS closure is too uncertain to permit fixed-price competition, contracts for services under a cost-reimbursable contract with an award fee will be used (Bushman, 2000). The entire process of chemical demilitarization has been a novel experience, both for the Army and its contractors. Consequently, a fixed-price contract for the first closure of a disposal facility was not practical. Fixed-price contracting for JACADS closure... [Pg.35]

The CDC in the United States invites bids for particular vaccines in a winner-take-all competition (Salkever and Frank 1996). Multiple contracts are sometimes awarded, usually because there is clear evidence that a single bidder would not be able to produce sufficient quantity to meet the expected purchase level however, during the period Salkever and Frank studied (before VFC), there were few bidders in CDC vaccine auctions. Thus, although the bidding process could be modified to deal with acquisition of particular vaccines, such as for flu, it seems unlikely that minor modifications could yield more than minor improvements. [Pg.122]
