Automotive body panel

ABS can be blended with bisphenol A polycarbonate resins to make a material having excellent low temperature toughness. The most important apphcation of this blend is for automotive body panels. [Pg.509]

The polyDCPD has good flexural modulus and exceUent impact resistance (61). Current uses for polyDCPD are in golf carts, snowmobiles, and automotive bumpers (62). The polymer is viewed as having a high potential, especially in automotive body panel appHcations. [Pg.434]

To illustrate the correct approach, consider applications in which a material is used in sheet form, as in automotive body panels, and suppose that the service requirements are for stiffness and strength in flexure. First imagine four panels with identical dimensions that were manufactured from the four materials given in Table 3-1. Their flexural stiffnesses and strengths depend directly on the respective material s modulus and strength. All the other factors are shared in common with the other materials, there being no significantly different Poisson ratios. Thus, the relative panel properties are identical with the relative material properties illustrated in Fig. 3-3. Obviously, the metal panels will be stiffer and... [Pg.135]

Step growth polymerization can also yield highly crosslinked polymer systems via a prepolymer process. In this process, we create a prepolymer through a step growth reaction mechanism on two of the sites of a trifunctional monomer. The third site, which is chemically different, can then react with another monomer that is added to the liquid prepolymer to create the crosslinked species. We often use heat to initiate the second reaction. We can use this method to directly create finished items by injecting a mixture of the liquid prepolymer and additional monomer into a mold where they polymerize to create the desired, final shape. Cultured marble countertops and some automotive body panels are created in this manner. [Pg.60]

Low-profile additives, which control shrinkage, have emerged as a distinct science and class of additive. Unsaturated polyester resins, as do all thermosetting polymers, shrink when cured. Low-profile additives are a major class of additives used to control shrinkage, which vastly improves surface quality. This science is credited with the opening of automotive markets where surface quality is of prime importance. In exterior automotive body panels, Class A surfaces are required for market acceptance. [Pg.707]

Since ASA has been on the market for over three decades and has thus acquired a certain maturity, it would be easy to conclude that no more major innovations can be expected from such a product. However, several important new fields of application are currently being developed. Among these are solar and safety technology and automotive body panels. [Pg.356]

A very promising new field of application for ASA and ASA-PC blends is automotive body panels. Until now, these have been made almost exclusively from painted metal. Since painting is costly, automotive companies are attempting to save costs by developing technologies that dispense with this operation. As in the case of the smart car, bulk coloured thermoplastics (e.g. PBT -PC blends) may be used to make body panels. However, such parts must still be sprayed with a top coat in order to achieve the desired scratch resistance and UV stability. [Pg.357]

The effect of moisture on nylon 6 resins is well-known and well-documented. (15) Because of this, the susceptibility of nylon block copolymers to moisture absorption was expected. Evaluation of requirements for exterior automotive body panels and other applications requiring dimensional stability indicated that early nylon block copolymer formulations would not meet specifications... [Pg.149]

Blends of PCTG with PC or SMA are typically formed by injection molding into business machines, appliance parts and automotive body panels. Properties are affected by injection speed, screw speed, back pressure, injection pressure, melt temperature, clamping pressure and cycle time. [Pg.721]

Alloys made by combining polyarylamide with PA and polypropylene (which could be hghtly glass reinforced) offer low water absorption, even at high PP levels, good impact resistance, and lower density, which reduces price per volume. Targeted applications include automotive body panels, and electrical components. [Pg.960]

SRIM has been restricted to non-appearance parts because of problems with glass read-out and surface porosity. Recently, SRIM is used more and more for exterior automotive body panels due to its improved surface qualities. Studies have shown that a Class-A surface comparable to SMC can be obtained by selecting the proper processing parameters, reinforcements (e.g. continuous-strand glass reinforcement mat) and resins. [Pg.104]

Other, nanometer-scale forms of carbon, such as nanotubes and graphenes, have been proposed as ESD fillers, though their early use may be greater with engineering polymers. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in diameters of lO-lOOnm, can induce the conductivity needed for electrostatically paintable plastic automotive body panels, for example. They are also said to be replacing carbon black and fiber in small, detailed electronics applications [6-5]. [Pg.95]

The nano-level dispersion of clay in thermoplastic olefin (TPO) polymer has potentially provided a platform for its use in automotive body panels of Volvo cars. The governing factors are light weight, consistent physical and mechanical properties, improved aesthetic appearance, improved wear resistance, and low temperature ductility. Recyclability of nano-clay incorporated thermoplastic olefin nanocomposites has provided an opportunity for their use in step assists and trim and panel in Hummer cars. [Pg.336]
