Phenolics. Phenol-formaldehyde (Bakelite) is one of the oldest synthetic materials available. It is a strong, hard, brittle material with good creep resistance and excellent electrical properties. Unfortunately the material is only available in dark colours and it is susceptible to attack by alkalis and oxidising agents. Typical applications are domestic electrical fittings, saucepan handles, fan blades, smoothing iron handles and pump parts. 

RLS is a neurologic medical condition characterized by an irresistible desire to move the limbs. It is thought that these abnormal sensations are a result of iron deficiency in the brain and iron-handling abnormalities in the CNS. Iron and H-ferritin concentrations, along with transferrin receptor and iron transporter numbers, are reduced in the substantia nigra of patients with RLS.20 These iron abnormalities lead to dysfunction of dopaminergic transmission in the substantia nigra.

In vitro experiments with Cp and Fet3p have shown dehnitively that both enzymes have a strong substrate specihcity toward Fe(II) that is not shared by the other well-characterized multicopper oxidases. Furthermore, several independent analyses have demonstrated that the formation of Tf Fe(III) in a mixture of apo iand Fe(II) is strongly catalyzed by Cp. At the other end of the experimental spectrum are the well-established correlations between organismal abnormalities in iron handling in...

Resins prepared from melamine, phenol and formaldehyde have found some use in the preparation of moulding powders. These materials have properties which are intermediate between those of melamine-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde moulding powders. In particular, mouldings have better dry-heat dimensional stability than those based on straight melamine-formaldehyde and they may be produced in a much wider range of colours than phenol-formaldehyde mouldings. Typical applications of melamine-phenol-formaldehyde materials include domestic mouldings such as iron handles where a combination of heat resistance and decorative appeal is required. 

Bulk applications of PF resins utilize novolaks in formulations designed for rapid cure. Traditionally, components were manufactured by compression or transfer moulding, the latter being preferred for products with moulded-in inserts. Injection moulding is gaining in use, for example for electrical components, electric iron handles (see Chapter 9), or saucepan handles (see below).
