Automobile enamel

These inventions were in many fields from food products to cracked petroleum but his preference was polymer technology. He was awarded patents by the U.S. Patent Office on the first automobile enamel, urea formaldehyde plastics and fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastics. [Pg.232]

Amino resins are also often used for the cure of other resins such as alkyds and reactive acryUc polymers. These polymer systems may contain 5—50% of the amino resin and are commonly used in the flexible backings found on carpets and draperies, as well as in protective surface coatings, particularly the durable baked enamels of appHances, automobiles, etc. [Pg.321]

Uses. About 60% of the MA produced is used to make unsaturated polyester and aikyd resins, which are formed by reaction of MA with glycols. Polyester resins are used in the fabrication of glass fiber reinforced parts. Applications include boat hulls, automobile body parts, patio furniture, shower stalls, and pipe. Aikyd resins are mostly used in coatings (paint, varnish, lacquers, and enamels). MA also is widely used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacture of plasticizers and dibasic acids (fumaric, maleic, and succinic). About 15% of MA production goes into the manufacture of viscosity index improvers and dispersants used as additives in lube oils. Several agricultural chemicals are based on maleic anhydride, the best known being Malathion. [Pg.298]

Zinc oxide (ZnO), which is produced by burning zinc vapor in atmospheric oxygen, is by far the most important compound of zinc. Under the name of zinc white, the oxide is used as a paint pigment. It is also used as a base in the manufacture of enamels and glass, and as a ruler in the fabrication of automobile tires and other kinds of rubber goods. Zinc sulfide (ZnS) is also an important white paint pigment which is used either as such or in the form of lithopone, which is a mixture of zinc sulfide and barium sulfate. This widely used pigment is prepared by the metathetical reaction between zinc sulfate and barium sulfide, a reaction in which both of the products are insoluble ... [Pg.563]

These varnishes can be used to produce heat-resistant enamels, which are prepared directly before use by mixing varnishes with aluminum power (usually 5 weight parts of powder per 100 weight parts of varnish). This enamel can be used for parts which operate at 450-500 °C (automobile radiators, calorifers, ventilation units, etc.). Polyphenylsiloxane can be used... [Pg.292]

Strong chemurgic movement initiated credited with nearly 200 industrial uses during its ten-year existence. Ford Motor Company uses significant amounts of soybean oil for enamel paint, glycerin for shock absorbers, in 1937 automobiles. [Pg.1641]

Products of the coatings industry—paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, chemical coatings, maintenance finishes, and other products both basic and sophisticated—have been used to protect, decorate, and provide functional properties to a host of surfaces and objects. The leveraged value of coatings is exemplified by the contribution of corrosion-resistant primers and of protective and decorative topcoats to the long life of structures, such as buildings and bridges, and to the appearance and durability of automobiles and appliances. [Pg.857]

Dimethyl adipate [627-93-0], glutarate [U19-40-0], and succinate [106-65-0] are used as a high-boiling mixture with good dissolution properties in stoving enamels, coil-coatings, and in the automobile industry. [Pg.366]

The U.S. market for urethane coatings in 1997 was reported to be 270 x 10 L with a value of 1.6 billion (53). The same report forecast the market in 2002 to be 290 X 10 L with a value of almost 1.9 billion. These figures do not include 320 million of isocyanate activators and flex additives used with acrylic and alkyd enamels in automobile refinish coatings. [Pg.8700]
