Authorship

Heating Kemp s acid with appropriate aromatic diamines yields bis-imides with two convergently oriented carboxylic acid groups on the edges of a hydrophobic pocket. Dozens of interesting molecular complexes have been obtained from such compounds and can be traced in the Journal of the American Chemical Society under the authorship of J. Rebek, Jr., (1985 and later e.g. T. Tjivikua, 1990 B). 

The networking of personal computers has continued and has enabled the sharing of expensive hard-copy output devices and other peripherals and has provided the significant benefit of faciUtating the transfer of data between computers. Joint authorship of technical articles is a quick and easy process with networked computers. The interappHcation communication that today links appHcations within a single computer will transparentiy link appHcations on networked computers. Voice-annotated documents are already available. 

The Copyright Act specifies that copyright extends to "original works of authorship fixed in any tangible medium of expression, now known or later developed, from which they can be perceived, reproduced, or otherwise communicated, either dkecdy or with the aid of a machine or device" (3). Many of the requkements for copyrightabiUty may be gleaned from this provision. 

Joint Authorship. When more than one author has created a work, the work is said to be a joint work. Under the law, such a joint work is one prepared by two or more authors with the intention that their contributions be merged into inseparable or interdependent parts of a unitary whole. Thus joint authorship can occur when a composer and a lyricist collaborate on a song. Even though their contributions can exist independendy of each other, ie, the music as an instmmental, the lyrics as a poem, they were created as interdependent parts of a unitary whole, ie, the song. Two scientists collaborating on an article for a scientific journal are similarly joint authors. Their contributions caimot be teased out of the article they have written and so are inseparable parts of a unitary whole. The test of joint authorship is intention. The creation must be made with the intention that the contributions be merged into one work, and that intention caimot be imputed after the fact of creation if it was not there to begin with. 

Joint Ownership. Joint ownership of copyright occurs when there is joint authorship, but it may also occur in other ways, for example, by transfer of a copyright to two or more individuals, such as when an author bequeaths a copyright to two children. 

Another useful approach is to attempt to get a broad review of the specification draft by operations, maintenance, and engineering. The specification must have an author who can write the basic document and who later edits the draft into the scope and language of the final specification. Single authorship, with committee review, is preferred over committee authorship. Only in rare instances is vendor participation in the specification authorship really justified, except in partnership relationships.

Chemists tend to be prolific authors. Some say they have a conceit of authorship, whereas others contend it is pride. Stacey was certainly proud of his many scientific papers (more than 350) and several books. In addition, he was founder-editor of three journals and he was a member of the editorial boards of several others. He was a supporter of Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry from its inception. He served on the advisory board for many years, was associate editor, and contributed to early volumes.

My supervisor at the time didn t have enough backbone to fight him. So, he was first author. Later, I discovered that the assay was sold without my knowledge. They are making lots of money on my idea. I didn t get first authorship. Plus, I didn t get any financial benefits from it.
