The joule, symbol J, is the unit of energy in the science connntinity. It is not widely used outside the science community in the United States, but it is elsewhere. For example, in the United States, the energy content of a food product is likely expressed in food calories. This energy could be expressed in joules, and that is being done in many parts of the world. A Diet Coca Cola in Australia is labeled Low Joule rather than Low Cal as in the United States. To obtain a feeling for the size of a joule, consider the following statistics ... [Pg.1196]

In April/May 2003 the TGA forced the recall of approximately 1600 complementary medicines at retail level throughout Australia, due to concerns about the quality of their manufacture. The recalled products were manufactured in Australia by Pan Pharmaceuticals, principally as a contract manufacturer for other companies. The resultant publicity impacted around the world and highlighted the importance of effective implementation of GMP standards for all therapeutic products. In view of the issues raised by this massive recall, and to restore community confidence, an Expert Committee on Complementary Medicines in the Health System was established to consider a wide range of matters relating to complementary medicines. Their report was published in September 2003 and is available from the TGA website. [Pg.668]

Total alkaline, totd caustic and alumina concentrations were determined using this method. [Pg.333]

This example illustrates the benefits and costs of introducing plants to new localities. Over the mere two hundred years of European settlement in Australia many of the World s most important crop and pasture plants and all of the World s worst weeds (Table I) have been introduced to the continent. The latter have attained problem status and several other introductions, such as Echium plantagineum L. (Paterson s Curse) from the Mediterranean region, freed from those organisms which maintain them in balance in their native communities, have posed threats to agriculture. [Pg.161]
