Galen P. Austin is a senior research associate at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health, Texas Tech University. He earned his doctoral degree in animal science with an emphasis on beef cattle production from Texas Tech University in December 2003. As an animal scientist, Dr. Austin s research interests are varied regarding livestock production and the environment. He has utilized GPS/GIS technology to monitor beef cattle movement and behavior and is interested in livestock disease epidemiology, in particular, zoonotic diseases. Additionally, Dr. Austin is concerned with and has research interests in the protection from and detection of agricultural terrorism directed at both on-farm/ranch livestock and confined animal feeding operations. [Pg.313]

In 1965, Sir Austin Bradford Hill expanded on these criteia in his Environment and Disease Association or Causation (Hill 1965). The article has been widely cited in journal articles, by health risk assessors, and by health risk assessment gnid-ance including that of EPA (2005) and WHO (1999). In his article. Hill described what he referred to as aspects of an association between an environmental exposure and disease that should be considered before detemining that the environmental exposure is causally associated with the disease. These aspects have commonly been referred to as criteria in the Uterature, although Hill nevCT referred to them as such. The aspects that Hill described are ... [Pg.408]

Silica is also involved in the aging process in senile dementia and in the identical type of detenoration that occurs in the brain in younger people as Alzheimer s disease. Austin (127) described characteristic microscopic bodies or plaques as well as other bodies corpora amylacea) that appear in the midst of certain deteriorating brain cells. These bodies contain a remarkably high concentration of silicon—in some regions up to 1-2% by weight. [Pg.756]
