30 Assault Unit

While in Paris establishing the 30 Assault Unit, an elite inteUigence-gathering task-force, Fleming attends a Christmas Party at the home of Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson (Silver, 2007). [Pg.259]

An approach to chemical protection which is so comprehensive in scope and extensive in provision has several attributes. In the first place, it should enhance the ability of Warsaw Pact forces to conduct sustained operations. First echelon units on emerging from a contaminated area would be expected to decontaminate partially and to continue the advance. If this was not practical, they could move aside while second echelon units rode through decontaminated zones to maintain the momentum. The original assault units could then be decontaminated rapidly (in about four hours for a battalion) before... [Pg.126]

Possibly the most important single military characteristic is a high degree of insecticidal activity per unit weight. The necessity for this requirement may be more fully appreciated when it is realized that approximately 3 tons of equipment and supplies per individual soldier are necessary during the assault stages of an invasion, and 0.75 ton of supplies and equipment per man is necessary to maintain one combat soldier for one month in the field. With this vast amount of equipment and supplies for each individual soldier, the weight of each specific item needed for his support must be critically scrutinized. [Pg.215]

Suter, Edgar A. Assault Weapons Revisited— An Analysis of the AMA Report. Joarw / of the Medical Association of Georgia, vol. 85, May 1994, n.p. Criticizes the American Medical Association report Assault Weapons as a Public Health Hazard in the United States. Suter argues that the high ammunition capacity of such weapons is usually irrelevant because only a few shots are fired in most incidents other than well-publicized mass shootings. Suter also accuses the report for relying only on unsubstantiated anecdotal data. [Pg.178]

The individual unit of the nervous system is the neuron, a specialized cell that both receives and transmits information. The nervous system contains more than 100 billion neurons and is a major user of metabolic energy in the human body. It is also a region particularly susceptible to injury from toxic chemicals, lack of oxygen, and other assaults. Depending on the nervous region in which they reside, neurons may have different anatomical features and may use different chemical transmitters. Neurons communicate with each other and with their end organs by these chemical signals, which are released from the nerve terminal and interact with specific receptors on adjacent neurons or cells. [Pg.37]

The DEA has documented approximately 4,500 federal, state, and local law enforcement investigations involving the distribution or possession of Rohypnol within the United States since 1985. The cases are spread across 38 states. However, at least two-thirds of those cases are in Florida and Texas, according to testimony given before Congress in 1999 by Terrance Woodworth, Deputy Director of the DEA s Office of Diversional Control. Since 1994, at least nine people have been convicted of sexual assault in five state court cases in which there was evidence that Rohypnol was used to incapacitate the victim. The DEA is aware of 17 other sexual assault cases that took place between 1994 to 1998 in which there is evidence to suggest Rohypnol was used. [Pg.442]

Healy et al. (2006) described nine cases in England, Scotland, Australia, and the United States as illustrations of antidepressant-induced violence. Two paroxetine, three sertraline, and one fluoxetine case resulted in homicide. One paroxetine case resulted in assault, one venlafaxine case resulted in attempted murder, and one fluoxetine case resulted in assault and robbery. Some were associated with maniclike symptoms. They also evaluated clinical trial data (see subsequent discussion). [Pg.146]

In the neuroleptic literature, Crowner et al. (1990) drew a direct connection between akathisia and violence. They filmed activities on a psychiatric unit 3 days a week, from 8 00 a.m. to noon, for 2 years. They screened the films for incidents of violence resulting in injury or with the potential to do so. They only rated segments where the participants, and at least two nonparticipating bystanders, were visible for at least 2 min of the 5-min rating period. Their findings are remarkable The assailants were akathisic before about half of all the assaults, as were the victims. Only 4 out of 24 nonparticipants displayed akathisia. This confirms an observation I have made over the years that most violence on psychiatric wards stems from the treatments, including drug toxicity and (unstudied in this project) provocation by staff. [Pg.148]

Since the appearance of PTSD is directly associated to the occurrence of specific traumatic events, its prevalence will vary significantly in different countries and even within countries. Exposure to war, torture, crime, natural disasters, traumatic social situations, motor vehicle accidents, and other traumatic events will all determine the rate of PTSD. Althongh the risk of experiencing a traumatic event sometime in one s lifetime is over 50%, only one-fifth of those who do so will develop the disorder. Overall, in the United States it is estimated that its lifetime prevalence is about 8% (Kessler et ah, 1995). We would typically look for PTSD in survivors of military combat and sexual assault, but it can also resnlt... [Pg.96]
