Assault

There is a curious irony in the nomination of hypochlorite as an environmentally benign oxidizing agent It comes at a time of increasing pressure to eliminate chlorine and chlorine containing com pounds from the environment to as great a degree as possible Any all inclusive assault on chlorine needs to... [Pg.645]

Forensic scientists work with physical evidence, ie, "data presented to a court or jury in proof of the facts in issue and which may include the testimony of witnesses, records, documents or objects." Physical evidence is teal or tangible and can HteraHy include almost anything, eg, the transient scent of perfume on the clothing of an assault victim the metaboHte of a dmg detected in the urine of an individual in a driving-under-the-influence-of-dmgs case the scene of an explosion or bullets removed from a murder victim s body. [Pg.484]

In nonindustrial settings, MCS substances are the cause of indoor air pollution and are the contaminants in air and water. Many of the chemicals which trigger MCS symptoms are known to be irritants or toxic to the nervous system. As an example, volatile organic compounds readily evaporate into the air at room temperature. Permitted airborne levels of such contaminants can still make ordinary people sick. When the human body is assaulted with levels of toxic chemicals that it cannot safely process, it is likely that at some point an individual will become ill. For some, the outcome could be cancer or reproductive damage. Others may become hypersensitive to these chemicals or develop other chronic disorders, while some people may not experience any noticeable health effects. Even where high levels of exposure occur, generally only a small percentage of people become chemically sensitive. [Pg.45]

Actual or threatened assault or violence or use of force at the premises (this relates to the legal definition of robbery). [Pg.165]

Despite its simple local rule base, EINSTein has an impressive repertoire of emergent collective behaviors forward advance, frontal attack, local clustering, penetration, retreat, attack posturing, containment, flanking maneuvers. Guerrilla-like assaults, among many others. [Pg.596]

In total synthesis, model studies are frequently performed on simpler systems prior to the final assault on the target molecule. In the synthesis of zaragozic acid A (1), 2-methyl-1,3-dithiane (92) was employed as a simple model for the more elaborate dithiane 67. Deprotonation of 92 with n-butyllithium under standard conditions47 and addition of the aldehyde provides a mixture of two diastereoisomers, 93 and 94 (Scheme 22), in approximately equal amounts. One of the diastereoisomers (93) lacks the TMS group,... [Pg.699]

Since the SUMO pathway affects multiple pathways ranging from transcription, DNA repair, and intracellular trafficking over cell signaling and cell cycle control to basic metabolism, it is not suiprising that links to diseases and viral assaults are emerging. However, the field is not yet at a stage sufficiently developed for pharmacological intervention. Below we will describe selected examples for links of the SUMO pathway to diseases and viral functions. [Pg.1166]

Another weapon system which was developed and engineered for production by the Arsenal for Southeast Asia was Beehive ammunition of varying calibers which dispense great numbers of tiny, lethal steel darts. This type of ammunition proved effective in Southeast Asia since it lends itself to use against troops in frontal mass assault as well as those entrenched behind the cover of heavy jungle brush... [Pg.750]

Chemical research is driven by many goals, and it progresses in many different ways. The essential traits of a good researcher are curiosity, creativity, flexibility, and dedication. Some chemical advances come from a direct assault on a known problem. A classic example is the development of the Hall process for refining aluminum from its ores, which we describe in Chapter 21,. As a contemporary example, many scientists around the world are working at a feverish pace to develop a vaccine against the AIDS virus. [Pg.6]

No Earth material was protected from this assault. The refinement of dating corals, analyzing volcanic rocks for partitioning and chronometer studies and extensions far and wide into ground waters and ocean bottom dwelling organisms has been the consequence of this innovation. [Pg.662]

We found that the group of arrestees who were positive for PCP only were most likely to be charged with robbery (22 percent). While assault was the most common charge for D- arrestees, it was the fourth most frequent charge for the PCP-only arrestees, and was even less common in the arrestees detected to be using hard drugs. [Pg.197]

This information suggests that the PCP-positive arrestee in Manhattan looks much like other drug-using arrestees. Far from being charged with assaults or bizarre types of offenses, PCP-positive arrestees are most likely to be charged with robbery, larceny, and other drug offenses. [Pg.199]
