Abietic acid is conveniently isolated from acid-isomerized wood rosin by slowly adding commercial diamylamine to a stirred solution of the material in acetone. The salt which separates (aD —18°) is crystallized four times from acetone and the purified salt (oD —60°) is treated in ethanol with acetic acid and water. After recrystallization from dilute ethanol the yield of abietic acid is 40%. [Pg.827]

Rosin is a complex mixture of naturally occurring high molecular weight organic acids and related materials. Rosin obtained from various fractions of exudates of pine trees, known as gum rosin, wood rosin and tall rosin, is composed of about 90% resin acids and 10% neutral materials (Table 1).
