Corrosion Resistant Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Fiber glass reinforcement bonded with furfuryl alcohol thermosetting resias provides plastics with unique properties. Excellent resistance to corrosion and heat distortion coupled with low flame spread and low smoke emission are characteristics that make them valuable as laminating resins with fiber glass (75,76). Another valuable property of furan FRP is its strength at elevated temperature. Hand-layup, spray-up, and filament-win ding techniques are employed to produce an array of corrosion-resistant equipment, pipes, tanks, vats, ducts, scmbbers, stacks, and reaction vessels for industrial appHcations throughout the world. [Pg.81]

Pattemators may comprise an array of tubes or concentric circular vessels to coUect Hquid droplets at specified axial and radial distances. Depending on the pattemator, various uniformity indexes can be defined using the accumulated relative values between the normalized flow rate over a certain sector or circular region and a reference value that represents a perfectly uniform distribution. For example, using an eight-sector pie-shaped coUector, the reference value for a perfectly uniform spray would be 12.5%. The uniformity index (28) could then be expressed as foUows, where is the normalized volume or mass flow rate percentage in each 45-degree sector. [Pg.331]

The cyclization of 1,2-dicarbonyl compounds with aldehydes in the presence of NH4OAC to give imidazoles was employed in a combinatorial study that compared conventional and microwave heating in the preparation of a library of sulfanyl-imidazoles (Scheme 15). The study employed an array of expandable reaction vessels that could accommodate a pressure build-up system for heating without loss of volatile solvents or reagents. A 24-membered library of imidazoles (48 and 49) was prepared in 16 min instead of the 12 h required using conventional heating [45]. [Pg.223]

This technique is invasive however, the particle can be designed to be neutrally buoyant so that it well represents the flow of the phase of interest. An array of detectors is positioned around the reactor vessel. Calibration must be performed by positioning the particle in the vessel at a number of known locations and recording each of the detector counts. During actual measurements, the y-ray emissions from the particle are monitored over many hours as it moves freely in the system maintained at steady state. Least-squares regression methods can be applied to evaluate the temporal position of the particle and thus velocity field [13, 14]. This technique offers modest spatial resolutions of 2-5 mm and sampling frequencies up to 25 Hz. [Pg.337]

A typical batch reactor (Figure 8.1) will be made of stainless steel or glass-lined steel. Stainless steel vessels have better heat transfer characteristics than their glass-lined counterparts and a wider array of reactor internals are available. Glass-lined vessels, on the other hand, can offer superior fouling or corrosion properties and are often used for reactions... [Pg.235]

Chemists use many different liquid solvents, but we focus most of our attention on water. When water Is the solvent, the solution Is said to be aqueous. A rich array of chemistry occurs in aqueous solution, including many geological and biochemical processes. Aqueous solutions dominate the chemistry of the Earth and the biosphere. The oceans, for instance, are rich broths of various cations and anions, sodium and chloride being the most abundant. The oceans can be thought of as huge aqueous solvent vessels for the remarkably complex chemistry of our world. Blood is an... [Pg.169]

Parallel processing of synthetic operations has been one of the cornerstones of medicinal and high-throughput synthesis for years. In the parallel synthesis of compound libraries, compounds are synthesized using ordered arrays of spatially separated reaction vessels adhering to the traditional one vessel/one compound philosophy. The defined location of the compound in the array provides the structure of the compound. A commonly used format for parallel synthesis is the 96-well microtiter plate, and today combinatorial libraries comprising hundreds to thousands of compounds can be synthesized by parallel synthesis, often in an automated fashion. [Pg.74]

One of the most common approaches to pyrrole synthesis is the Paal-Knorr reaction, in which 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds are converted to pyrroles by acid-mediated dehydrative cyclization in the presence of a primary amine. The group of Taddei has reported a microwave-assisted variation of the Paal-Knorr procedure, whereby a small array of tetrasubstituted pyrroles was obtained (Scheme 6.181) [342], The pyrroles were effectively synthesized by heating a solution of the appropriate 1,4-dicarbonyl compound in the presence of 5 equivalents of the primary amine in acetic acid at 180 °C for 3 min. The same result was obtained by heating an identical mixture under open-vessel microwave conditions (reflux) for 5 min. Interestingly, the authors were unable to achieve meaningful product yields when attempting to carry out the same transformation by oil-bath heating. [Pg.224]

As a matter of fact, one may think of a multiscale approach coupling a macroscale simulation (preferably, a LES) of the whole vessel to meso or microscale simulations (DNS) of local processes. A rather simple, off-line way of doing this is to incorporate the effect of microscale phenomena into the full-scale simulation of the vessel by means of phenomenological coefficients derived from microscale simulations. Kandhai et al. (2003) demonstrated the power of this approach by deriving the functional dependence of the singleparticle drag force in a swarm of particles on volume fraction by means of DNS of the fluid flow through disordered arrays of spheres in a periodic box this functional dependence now can be used in full-scale simulations of any flow device. [Pg.157]

A liquid flow microcalorimeter, the thermal activity monitor (TAM), is commercially available from ThermoMetric (formerly LKB/Bofors). This instrument consists of two glass or steel ampules with a volume of 3 to 4 cm3 (25 cm3 ampule available with a single detector), placed in a heat sink block. Recently, an injection-titration sample vessel was developed which acts as a microreactor. This vessel is provided with flow-in, flow-out, and titration lines, with a stirring device. The isothermal temperature around the heat sink is maintained by a controlled water bath. Each vessel holder, containing an ampoule, is in direct contact with a thermopile array, and the two arrays are joined in series so that their output voltages subtract. The two pairs of thermopile arrays are oppositely connected to obtain a differential output,... [Pg.63]
