INDEX uniform

A number of terms are used to describe fiber length variability, such as uniformity index.uniformity ratio, and upper half mean length, but these are terms that probably go beyond the confines of the present volume, and for the moment it seems necessary only that the reader gains a brief understanding of the importance of measuring the various aspects... 

Sometimes a long single-strand chain is used for precision indexing. A long single chain is made in short sections for easier handling. In this case, each section of chain should be matched for length to the other sections. This ensures that the chain will index uniformly no matter which section is active. 

Pattemators may comprise an array of tubes or concentric circular vessels to coUect Hquid droplets at specified axial and radial distances. Depending on the pattemator, various uniformity indexes can be defined using the accumulated relative values between the normalized flow rate over a certain sector or circular region and a reference value that represents a perfectly uniform distribution. For example, using an eight-sector pie-shaped coUector, the reference value for a perfectly uniform spray would be 12.5%. The uniformity index (28) could then be expressed as foUows, where is the normalized volume or mass flow rate percentage in each 45-degree sector. 

The molecular uniformity of constituting components of a nb/lcb glucan fraction of potato starch was investigated with Sepharose CL 2B (Fig. 16.16) as well as with Sephacryl S-1000 (Fig. 16.17). Therefore, each of the subsequently eluted 3-ml fractions was analyzed on their potential to form inclusion complexes with iodine, a sensitive test for the presence of nb/lcb glucans. Results are shown in Fig. 16.17 in terms of branching index, the ratio of extinction of pure iodine solution and of nb/lcb glucan/iodine complex the higher the index, the more pronounced the nb/lcb characteristics. 

It should be stated that the nomenclature of the triazine derivatives is not uniform, e.g., in Chemical Abstracts the compounds are often indexed according to another sy.stem than that used in the original papers, and an additional system could have been used for this review. To avoid further complications, the author will u.se the commonest nomeclature in accordance with the representative monographs in this field (see references 12 and 45.)... 

Although the Langelier index is probably the most frequently quoted measure of a water s corrosivity, it is at best a not very reliable guide. All that the index can do, and all that its author claimed for it is to provide an indication of a water s thermodynamic tendency to precipitate calcium carbonate. It cannot indicate if sufficient material will be deposited to completely cover all exposed metal surfaces consequently a very soft water can have a strongly positive index but still be corrosive. Similarly the index cannot take into account if the precipitate will be in the appropriate physical form, i.e. a semi-amorphous egg-shell like deposit that spreads uniformly over all the exposed surfaces rather than forming isolated crystals at a limited number of nucleation sites. The egg-shell type of deposit has been shown to be associated with the presence of organic material which affects the growth mechanism of the calcium carbonate crystals . Where a substantial and stable deposit is produced on a metal surface, this is an effective anticorrosion barrier and forms the basis of a chemical treatment to protect water pipes . However, the conditions required for such a process are not likely to arise with any natural waters.

Jackson and McDonald13 analyzed samples of inulin from various sources. They obtained a uniform product by recrystallization from water, irrespective of the source. Since they determined total solids by refractive index and density measurements on the hydrolyzed inulin, they were not concerned with its crystalline form nor with its moisture content.
