Although the polycyclic aromatics detected by GCMS would give strong C-H stretch bands in the gas phase [8], if they were adsorbed with the ring system parallel to the surface then the intensity may be below detection limits. However the FTIR spectra also revealed carbonate and carboxylate species on the alumina surface. These species will also contribute to the differential between the carbon retained by the catalyst and that removed under regeneration. [Pg.172]

The relative retention time (relative to dy-nitronaphthalene) and mass spectrum of each standard compound were used to assign specific isomer identification to a few of the nitro-aromatics detected in the extracts. Note that in liquid phase chromatography there are no detectors that are both sensitive and universal, that is, which respond linearly to solute concentration regardless of its chemical nature. Aromatic Hydrocarbons. These are the most toxic of the hydrocarbons and inhalation of the vapor can cause acute intoxication. Benzene is particularly toxic and long-term exposure can cause anemia and leukopenia, even with concentrations too low for detection by odor or simple instmments. The currendy acceptable average vapor concentration for benzene is no more than 1 ppm. PolycycHc aromatics are not sufftcientiy volatile to present a threat by inhalation (except from pyrolysis of tobacco), but it is known that certain industrial products, such as coal tar, are rich in polycycHc aromatics and continued exposure of human skin to these products results in cancer. [Pg.370]

Air Monitoring. The atmosphere in work areas is monitored for worker safety. Volatile amines and related compounds can be detected at low concentrations in the air by a number of methods. Suitable methods include chemical, chromatographic, and spectroscopic techniques. For example, the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods has methods based on gas chromatography which are suitable for common aromatic and aHphatic amines as well as ethanolamines (67). Aromatic amines which diazotize readily can also be detected photometrically using a treated paper which changes color (68). Process Oils, Plasticizers. Petroleum-based mbber process oils generally contain a mixture of paraffinic, naphthenic, and aromatic components. These oils vary in composition from grade to grade, but most contain some unsaturated moieties and this unsaturation can compete with the polymer for curatives. Therefore, state of cure can be decreased. This is not easily detected because oil softens the compound which masks the loss of state of cure. [Pg.242]
